Freinds at the same table
Resently on a trip to Vegas with my 3 new business partners i was sitting at a $200 buy-in no limit game at Mandalay. ( I will call them BP1 = business partner 1,Bp2, so on ) BP1 and i have taken trip to our local card clubs ( usually Comemerce or the bike) allot together in the last year. usually in a $100, $200 or $100-$500 buy in. We usually end up not being at the same table at all or maybe short periods of time at best.
The Mandalay usually only has 2 $200 buy-in tables, we ended up at the main table together. I personally hate when 2 or 3 locals are at the same table and don't play each other. I feel it kills the game, it make the other players feel as it is the locals against "us".and "us" don't know each other and "us" WILL take each others money. The following hand came up: BP1 is in the SB, a middle posision player calls i call in the button with 10 Q. P1/SB raises to $20 we all call. flop is AQk rainbow, BP1/SB bets $40 mp folds i call. I figure BP1/SB to have 2pair and MP one pair bad kicker or better yet they had each other drawing short. The turn comes a J(AQKJ) giving me a Straight. BP1/SB checks i check, river comes a J (AQKJJ) I realize this should have been a scare cared for me, but from his reaction on the turn ( straight posible) and my knowledge of this player i knew he had to pairs. His $40 bet on the flop told me he was protecting 2 pairs. I couldn't check my straight on the river, i bet $40 he calls i win he has 2 pairs. After at dinner they all said i should not have bet the river we should have checked checked and best hand wins. I had just seen two hands earlier where a guy bet on the flop, 1 caller. check check to the river the caller turned a 9's full of 4's boat. why would the caller check his boat on the turn?? OH.. YES.. they were both locals. Am i the only one who thinks locals not playing each other kills the game. by the way the reson for me betting my hand on the river was to show others that they didn't have to worry about us not playing each other. Opinions / coments???? |

Re: Freinds at the same table
Ummm...fold preflop.
As for playing against your friends, I think it's to each his own. I personally don't mind taking a run at a friend, and vice-versa, but I usually would rather that it doesn't hurt too bad either way. As for the rest of the table, I don't really care what they think. As long as we're respecting the game itself, it's all good. |

Re: Freinds at the same table
i know amongst my friends this would definitely be a check-check situation... i've heard a few stories about upset friends who had someone draw out on them and then made them pay to see their beat. everyone differs, but i would say it'd be better to keep good relations with your friends and business partners than a bunch of strangers in vegas. just my .02

Re: Freinds at the same table
I had the same experience w/ locals when 3 buddies and I went to Biloxi/Gulfport. Everyone knew each other by name, including the dealer and would rarely raise each other's bet unless their was a "tourist" in the hand. Fortunatley I held my own but I thought it greatly took away from the game. I know Biloxi/Gulfport is nothing compared to Vegas, AC, or LA. Is this an issue/problem everywhere?

Re: Freinds at the same table
I have played up and down the west coast & vegas and have found this to be true to most casino's i visit, specially the small card rooms. I have found that if i servay the table and find out early on who are the locals and see how they play each other and if this is the case. that usually will dictate how i make my adjustment on how to play. I usually will be allot more aggresive with the locals. If i am in a hand with 2, i prefer to be in between then. I will usually check raise or reraise with allot more hands in order to not give them the chance to make it 2 against 1. In the long run they are more likely to make better hands when it is 2 against 1.
Here is a good excample: same trip, 2 locals(L1 & l2) and a turist (T1). L1 was in the BB T1 called from middle position L2 called from the Botton. on the flop L1 bets $20 T1 folds L2 calls. Turn and river check, check. T2 turned 9's over 4's boat. Why would T2 check to T1 on the turn or river when T1 bet on the flop??? A perfect excample or locals not playing each other. |

Re: Freinds at the same table
YOu did the right thing by my standards.
I played a local game here w/ 57 players at $50 per. combining of tables brings tow Italian gents to my table. They are easing off each other after dragging one short stack all in pre flop. This really pissed me off. Recombine tables again. (did I mention this is not done by draw or other random circunstances?) I sit at a seat and on e of the Italian gents sits to my left. The guy running the floor says would you mind moving to me. I ask why. HE replies these two guys were hoping to sit together. I look up and it's the other guy w/ the accent! I tel the manager I am not moving my seat. I look at the guys standing and tell him to shove off to the other table and see how he does without protection from this clown. 20 minutes later he's busted out. 35 mins later the other guy is rocked out by me. adios boys! I play w/ friends all the time and we all play to win and still remain friends long after the tournament or sessionis over. eric |

Re: Friends at the same table
I am friends with many people I play poker with, and we all understand that we are all there to win each other's money. While I don't think it kills a game for two people to not bet each other, I think it's silly. What's wrong with betting each other?
How can you play poker, together, if you're afraid of somehow upsetting someone by winning money from them? You're playing poker!!!!! Could you imagine playing another copmpetition, one in which money wasn't used to keep score, and when two friends got heads up they quit playing so they didn't have to beat each other????? Money is how you keep score, if winning money from a friend bothers you then I don't think you should play in the sdame game, or maybe you shouldn't be friends. Re: Freinds at the same table
I'd be offended if my buddies DIDNT check-raise me. It's poker, its the game we love. I'm strongly against colluding and thats what it is in a sense. As a player you glean alot of information by watching hands that you are not involved in. If a few players won't mix it up with each other, its not much of a poker game at all. If one of my friends takes me for a bunch of cash, well the drinks are on him and vice versa. I forget who said this I wanna say it was Johnny Moss but, I'm not sure "I love my grandmother but, if she was sitting in my game I'd bust her."
