thanks for the reply, do banks carry other curreny, would I be able go to my bank and get out canadian currency before I left? also, do they always accept other currencies?

I'm from Canada, and I always go to the bank before a trip to the states in order to minimize fees. If you convert the money at your own bank, this is your best bet. If you don't want to carry 3.5k cash across the border, then you would have to pay the convenience fee at any ATM.
