why is everyone talking about the "fenway boost" that lowell is going to get? it isnt going to make him a better hitter.

[/ QUOTE ]

It will certainly help his stats.

[/ QUOTE ]

right, obviously it will help his stats but it will help everyones stats. it wont make him a better player, and as obvious as it is, there are sportswriters (not just fans) saying "oh those numbers will go up in fenway". well no [censored] sherlock, but that doesnt make him better relative to their other options.

[/ QUOTE ]

Let's see. The other options are Joe Randa, Jose Valentin, ooooh and Joe McEwing is available.

This is essentially Bill Mueller vs Mike Lowell. Offensively that is a wash. Lowell has an edge defensively. From a performance standpoint, Lowell will be an upgrade for the Red Sox at third base.

[/ QUOTE ]

what does this have to do with my point? my point in those posts was very specific, i was annoyed at sportswriters saying "lowell's stats will get a boost from fenway". that statement is asinine.

I know WHIP isnt the best tool to use when discussing the overall worth of a pitcher, but here are the MLB ranks of starting pitchers last year according to WHIP:

pedro
santana
clemens
pettite
peavy
carpenter
RJ
d train
smoltz
zambrano
colon
garland
silva
weaver
BECKETT

Beckett actually does a little better by some other measures.

Why is this thread so long? This is obviously a tremendous deal for the Red Sox. Are people actually suggesting this *isn't* a good deal?

i think for me its more like "coming to terms with the deal" and making nit points at its weaknesses.

Officially a done deal per ESPN, and even better than before for Boston.
ESPN link

Boston gets: Beckett, Lowell, Guillermo Mota
Florida gets: H Ramirez, Sanchez, J Delgado and single-A pitcher Harvey Garcia.

Outstanding trade for the Red Sox...kudos to the front office.

Mota fell off big time last year. I dont know if is BABIP was really high or what (anyone care to check?), his walk rate did go up noticeably. With the amount Ryan just signed for, it looks like decent bargain grab though.

Mota just seems like another one of those middle relief guys who are basically expendable.

The Sox almost refused the deal based on health issues with Beckett, and demanded Mota as compensation. I don't think they got much with Mota and I am concerned about the "health issues."

Um, you guys are out of your mind. Mota is one of the best set up men in the game. At no time last year was he pitching healthy. I'd be more concerned over Mota's health than Beckett's.

If you get 150 inning a year out of Beckett, and nothing out of Lowell and Mota, that is worth four minor leaguers, no matter how much hype they come with. This deal was already a home run for the Red Sox, add in Mota and it's a GRAND SLAM!
