as long as you're of legal age then you must do what you think is best for you. parents who do not understand that must be confronted; otherwise they continuously feel that they have some 'right' to be a part of the decision making process. this is principle nothing else.

solution: go open a new bank account; get a PO box or a box from mailbox etc., whatever. set up your new account and use the addy you just set up. put money in and use IGM pay; they will never know.

as far as them purchasing you a laptop why don t you just earn enough loot yrself and take her out of the equation?

The laptop is not an issue, really. I know they will get me one for college, I'm just mad that they are acting like I'm going to lose all of my money and the house on a poker bet or something.

Take out your original $50, and show her the cheque.

My parents weren't too happy about my poker until I showed them that not only was I winning, but I was also playing with other people's money, seeing as I'd withdrawn my buy-in once my bankroll was big enough.

Your mother has a right to be worried. Most people who play poker lose money. The majority of 2+2ers are probably losers, though most people won't confess to that fact.

You're about to start college and you're living at home, so I'm guessing you're 18, 19 at most. Your mom says you play all day, you say you play 2 hours at most. Are you being honest with us, or are you trying to one-side this story?

You deposited $50 in March and turned that into $650. That's over the course of one month. That's a good run, but that might be all it is. One month is hardly enough to see if you're winning or not. After one month of playing, odds are you've hit a really nice run. Let me ask... what limits do you play?

That being said, she's your mother and she's worried. Most people don't realize that poker is a game that can be beat. They lump it in with all the other casino games where the house has the advantage.

The best thing you can do is to sit down with her and try to explain things to her. Explain the edges that good players have. If she doesn't want to or can't understand, then you should respect her wishes. My guess is that they are helping you with college and everything else. Wait until you are on your own, then play.

If you truly aren't addicted, you should be able to go a while without playing, right? Sneaking around and playing behind her back is a sign that you may very well be addicted.

Well same situation with my mom. She just about went crazy when she stepped into my room and say how big the pot was that I won. She is also not thrilled with my recent purchase of a second 2001FP.

Both my parents do not realize that it's not just a game of chance.

"It's a skill game. Why do you think the same 5 guys make it to the final table of the World Series of Poker every year? Are they the luckiest guys in Vegas?"

Just say that to your mom, lol.

Agreed. The fact that I've never put a cent of my own money into this lends me a whole load of credibility. In fact, take $100 out, take your parents to dinner, and pledge never to deposit again. (If you bust out before you're out of the house, you probably need a break anyway.) That way it's impossible for you not to end up with a profit.

I just don't deal much with people who can't handle the basic math, though.

"She says that if I don't stop gambling she will not buy me a laptop for college because she is afraid I will use it to just gamble all the time"

Just keep playing and buy your own laptop.
