AQ hand, bad play?
6-12 game at the local casino.
I hold a [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]q [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] in the cutoff. table is very loose, lots of action. I have a very tight table image, as I have hardly gotten any playable cards. Most hands go to showdown. 1 limper in front of me, I raise it up. Villain on the button cold calls, my read on him is very loose pf, but tight-aggresive afterwards. both blinds fold, the one limper calls. flop comes A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 6 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 2 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] gets checked to me, I bet out, and he raises, limper folds to me.. I think for a bit, I read big weakness in his hand, and It seems like he is trying to protect his hand with either AK, a weaker ace, or perhaps a made flush like 78. I decide to just call, with the intent of representing a high flush if another heart comes down, and if one doesn't I might pay off AK, 2-pair or trips seeing as I have read him as pretty weak, or I might fold if I believe he has a made flush. The turn came K [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] I lead out with a bet out pretty quick. The look he gave me immediately told me that he didn't like what I had just done, I put him on a pretty weak hand at this point. After some thinking he calls, At this point I am pretty sure he is holding two hearts. River comes q [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] I lead out, he calls. I say nice call and flip my hand over, he shows me 9-3 of hearts. I don't think I would normally make the play that I did on the turn, but I felt like I had a strong read on his cards, which ended up being correct. And on the river the pot looked nice enough to continue my semi-bluff. I hate when I find out someone cold called my raise with a trash hand like that, but I knew he was capable of it. So I got over it quickly. Anyways did I play this wrong? Should I have 3-bet it on the flop? or even fold? thx, kyle |

Re: AQ hand, bad play?
I dont like the river bet. I mean if he had 2 smaller pair you pulled ahead otherwise you are behind almost everything. Since he called that turn he is going to call the river too. Even if he has a set he is still most likely going to call the river. So basically all you can beat is AJ or any other 2 pairs... So you should check the river and he will prolly check behind you. If he bets I agree you probably have to pay it off since he showed weakness on the turn. He probably will not bet though since you said he showed fear on the turn.

Re: AQ hand, bad play?
This was the only way you're going to win this hand. Your read was right on about his made small flush. Check-folding was probably the best option on the turn. Betting was a close second. Check-calling is the worst. Many tighter players would lay a nine-high down. But your villain cold-called with 9-3s, which means that he's the type of player in which no way in hell would he lay it down.
Good play, good thinking, but wrong player to do it against. |
