Default To chop or not to chop, that is the question...

Playing in a live tournament last weekend, we got down to heads up, our stacks were basically even (I had roughly one more BB, 58k - 50k), payouts were $1330 for 1st, $660 for second. Opponent asks me if I wanted to chop, I agreed even though I was playing good and thought my chance of winning were pretty good.

My reasoning was that at the time the blinds were 4k-8k, getting ready to double after another 3 hands maybe, which would make it basically an all-in fest.

Would you chop here or am I just a big wussy?

You don't give enough information. What was the split going to be? Were you just splitting 50/50? Were you taking 58/108 of the prize money? If you could get 60/40, I'd say you'd be doing pretty well to take it.

We agreed to a 50/50 split.

It depends.

1) Quality of the other player?
2) Blinds would have made it pretty much a coin flip soon, so how much do you like to gamble?
3) How bad did you need the money? Bird in the hand ...

1) Good enough to make it to the final 2 ,
I think I could have taken him if the blinds weren't so high.

2) Exactly why I chopped, figured at that point I didn't want to effectively lose $350 on a coin flip.

3) Didn't really need the money, but winning a grand sounds a lot better than winng $650.

If your main goal was to win the tourney I wouldn't chop. If you goal was to win money then you chop. Decide before tourney on why you are playing. Are you playing to win or to place.

So the question becomes how good is your opponent at an all-in fest?

When two hands are going to cost you 24k in blinds within a couple of minutes, and you each have less than 55k, to NOT chop would be criminal. It has come down to whomever catches cards, not a test of skill.

I hate chops, when there is play in a tourney, but your cardroom has taken the skill out of this HU match, so you need to guarantee the extra money. This "extra" $400 will give you lots of entries into better structured tournaments where you can use your skill to potentially win first.

IMO,
