View Full Version : A comment on metrosexuality

Perhaps this belongs in the Math, Science, Philosophy forum, but I felt that OOT would be best to answer it.

Metrosexuals are people who, in essenece, focus on form rather than function. They may wear uncomfortable, inconvenient clothes rather than more practical clothing in order to, in their minds, be more attractive. They have often been described as "straight guys who act gay," but I think there's more to it than that.

In the true hunter/gatherer sense, men are intended to be more practical in their attire. I ask, are metrosexuals giving up their role as men in order to accept a more feminine, more formal role, or, are they rather accepting the necessity of form as a way to attract the opposite sex for matters of procreation?

Well that's kind of what I'm asking. Are they taking on more feminine qualities in order to attract women, or do they feel that there is some trend in modern western society that forces them to?

I think you've got an awfully narrow and retarded definition of metrosexual.

Dressing nice != uncomfortable.

Dragging a "hunter/gatherer" analogy into 2005, where the people who are the most apt providers are likely those dressed the best, just fails totally.

As someone who is far from "metro", based on people I know, I would say its almost always the latter. This is obviously an oversimplification, however, and this creates some problems. But in an "either/or" sense my answer definantly stands.

how about it just feels good to dress well. it might be even more uncomfortable to metrosexuals to be seen in public with clothes that satisfy their needs of relaxation than clothes that make them appear classy.

this comes from a guy who's worn the same pajama pants for four days in a row. GOD I love college.

I'm not sure I agree with your assesment of metrosexuals. I've been accused of being one, once or twice, for the simple fact I like nice clothes. Not uncomfortable clothes, or clothes that stand out in some way, just nice, well-worth-the-money style clothes.

I just think some men like to look better than your average frat boy. Nothing wrong with it.

And I wouldn't get those facials if my girlfriend didn't pay for 'em, dammit. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I don't dress to impress except for work-client stuff or special occasions, personally. But I don't see it as gay or accepting of feminine roles. Where it stands out, I just think it's vain when it's obvious, but fine otherwise.

It depends how far it is from the norm where you are, I think. Go to Italy, say, they all dress pretty great there, but they don't stand out as individuals cos of that, it's the norm.

'Metrosexual' is more than dress. Lotions, manicures, sack shaving, daily teeth brushing... basically grooming oneself like a chick. In other words, about 2/3 the population of OOT.

It's a question of traditional gender roles rather than sexual preference.

[/ QUOTE ]

You're making assumptions about good looking clothes being uncomfortable. When I wear a suit I know I look good and I am not uncomfortable. When I wear tight ass jeans I know I look good and I am not uncomfortable. Just because someone takes pride in their appearance does does not make them "acting gay." The fact that you even equate that someone who takes pride in their appearance to someone who is gay just makes your prejudice shine through. I am sorry you are not confident enough to wear trendy clothes and take pride in your appearance.

um, before you go letting your closet woes get you down, notice that when the op said acting gay, he said it in quotation marks, meaning that he didn't agree with it.

I believe that what is happening to guys is that we're allowing women to show us how to do everything.

look at every commercial, every ad.. if a guy isnt stupid, rude, smelly, and incompetant, he's gay.

Exactly. I was the same way as many people in this thread for a long time. Then I made a decision to start dressing nicer. Holy ish did I get a lot more tail.

There's just two factions of guys. Those who take pride in their clothing and those who don't. Those who don't resent the guys who have the style sense to dress well. Those who dress well just laugh at the guys who dress like slobs. I have found this to be true without fail.

I'm just waiting for someone to say "I don't want a girl who cares if I dress well." It's the motto of the ugly, unstylish man.

Fair enough, maybe I was unclear in my OP, but I'm referring to the latter. I never thought that guys who just dress well (and I'd like to consider myself one of them) as metrosexuals, I thought that "going overboard" was inherent.

You didn't make this very clear at all. Or I'm drunk. I ask to rescind any offensive statements I have made if this was the intent of your post.

I just get tired of getting ragged on at work for dressing well (I work with a bunch of rednecks cum businessmen). I thought you were ragging on guys who take pride in their appearance.
