I want to get involved in some volunteer work and signed up with New York Cares (http://www.nycares.org/index.lasso). They seem to be an umbrella organization with all kinds of volunteer activities and projects going on every day.

Has anyone worked with them? Any thoughts?

To get started I guess you have to go through a one-hour orientation, after which you can do the volunteer activities. Mine is Thursday at 6:00 PM, just in case anyone wants to combine volunteer work with the fabulous opportunity to meet up with me.

I don't know about NYC, but in general City Cares/Hands On is great. They are part of the Hands On Network (http://www.handsonnetwork.com/our-network/). Great organization. I have volunteered through Hands On Atlanta and Hands On San Francisco.

I did this a few years back; from 02-03. Sorta mehish; I painted a bench at a school on 138th.
