View Full Version : Moving to San Diego (like 80% sure)

Yet I have never been there. Not a big deal, I plan on visiting in October/November and moving Jan 1st if I like it(from all accounts I will). I have some questions/request for suggestions.

Moving cross country. Fortunately the apartment I am living in was furnished with a bed, kitchen area washer dryer etc....so the only things I would have to move are:

Computer equipment

Desk/Side table (together they cost like $70?)
Desk Chair ($100+)

A futon Sofa

TV (again cheap)

CD boom box (cheap, old. sucks)

My IPOD dock player

Clothes (limited amount due to the fact that I plan on losing a significant amount of weight, and restocking my wardrobe to its full pimp potential)

Shitload of books

2 dead hookers

Really that's about it. I drive a Camry, and have decent trunk space, so I suppose I could fit most of my stuff in the car. I also have heard shipping stuff via Amtrak is cheap. Should I just ditch the cheap electronics (TV/Radio) and leave it for the next tenant? Actually the stereo is small enough to fit in the car....SO leave the TV and fit the computer in the trunk.....

I plan on driving, and setting a course that hits various casino. Anyone want to go for the trip?

PS- Joetall is thinking of coming with me, but who knows with the way that boy falls in love.

When I moved crosstown I got all new stuff. Ditch the cheap [censored], anything worth less then 100 bucks and is not "new" or what you really want, just give to goodwill and take the tax write off.

True man. The fact your even considering bringing:

Across country with you is absolutely absurd. I thought you were a baller.

What do you mean by a sh!tload of books? Two of my uncles are academics, so my vision of a sh!tload is more than can be carried in a the trunk of a car in a single trip.

Fit what you can in the trunk and screw the rest... if your books don't fit, find a cheap alternative means of shipping (like amtrak if they do that or try a bus company).

Clearly the correct answer to this, is to go through NY and hit Turning Stone, then head West through Wisc, up to Minn to stop at Canterbury. After that, drive as fast as possible through the Dakotas. Get into Montana, and play some of the small cardrooms that have antiquated rules like no check-raising. Stop at one of the many combo gas station/bar/casino's you'll see along I-90.

Then head to Washington, to gambool at the Muckleshoot. From there, of course then you head down the coast - hit the Bay Area, Commerce, and then finally San Diego. Now that's a trip!

If you want to play much live poker, you'll want to live in Clairemont or preferably further north (Carlsbad), since the only action higher than 8/16 is Ocean's 11. There are lots of apartments in University City (UTC) area, near UCSD. Rents drop if you go 5 miles east, but the weather is nicer when you're close to the beach.

You'll love it in SD - there are so many kids from Boston/Philly/NY/Jersey/Maryland/etc. that you'll find a little microcosm of east coasters that all hang out. It is definitely the right move. Most of my friends that moved from the aforementioned areas think that moving to SD was the best thing they have ever done.

look in mission beach for on/near the water houses for cheap - otherwise look in pacific beach to be more with the 20-27 year old crowd and the solid bar scene. if you like urban look downtown but it is more expensive than the beach areas. ocean beach is ghetto but has more of a surfer/dead beat/pot head vibe if you're in to that. if you are a normal twenty year old that likes to party, definitely choose MB or PB.

acutally being in mission beach or pacific beach puts you right on the 8 which is a straight shot out to the indian casinos. ocean's eleven is not that far a trip either - probably 25/30 minutes max - we used to make the run to both sycuan, viejas and o11 regularly when we lived there.

for something closer to oceanside try del mar - that place is cougar central and has good night life - although is a little more pricey.

I'd much rather Ocean's 11 than the crappy rooms at the indian casinos. Also, even under ideal conditions, there's no way you're making it to OE from PB in 25 minutes. I lived a few blocks off of I-5 at Del Mar Heights Road and it took me 25 minutes to get up there with just a little traffic.

But... the hot partying chicks are down in PB and MB... Del Mar has cougars. Although, I do like Jimmy O's and there's quite a nice selection of women there on a Friday night. You're going to need some money, though, for them.

jimmy o's is solid and i am a fan of en fuego's as well for a couple of drinks before hitting jimmy o's.

ocean's 11 does have a decent card room and the lower limit games are super soft.

San Clemente bro, I told this already. We'll go out there this fall.

San Clemente doesn't even compare to the beaches of San Diego - that would be a terrible move - come all that way and end up there? i mean its a nice sleepy beach town but no place to land from the east coast - coming to southern california to live in san clemente is like going to vegas and then staying at the airport hilton -- and never leaving.

Does anyone ever see weird titles when they first glance at a post. When I looked at this on the main page I thought it said "Dying of cancer (like 80% sure". The things I looked at for a good 10-15 seconds before it changed back to its actual title. Anyone else? I am just [censored] up or what?
