View Full Version : 100xBB on an overpair?

Villain is a bit of a donk and has shown down all sorts of crap in raised pots (KTo, 65o, A9o). The flop looks like way ahead/way behind to me so I don't see a point in raising there. He paused for a very long time before betting the turn and, at that point, it was clearly push or fold time to me. Comments?

Question: Has Villain shown down only winners with his crap in raised pots? If he hasn't, I call in a flash. Too much potential for an AJ, KJ or QJ for me to fold.

I like your line. Given your read of villain, he could easily have KJ or QJ. If he has a set, so be it. I'm not getting away from this hand.

Can you please elaborate on why you think this flop is a way ahead/way behind situation? Is he normally pretty passive with his junk top pair?

I think way ahead/way behind here means that both Hero and Villain are drawing to very few outs to improve and overtake the opponent.

Hero has 2 outs, period. Villain has very few possible drawing hands here that he would call Hero's preflop raise with, so he's drawing thin as well.

So whoever is ahead right here is highly likely to finish ahead.

I understand what it means, I just don't see them as equally likely occurences with this board without a read that villain is not betting this strongly with at least 2 pair.

Other than 65, there are no draws on this board (its rainbow and fairly disjointed). If I'm not winning here, I'm most likely up against a set and have only two outs (the other two aces, the runner-runner straight doesn't count for much). If villain has just one pair himself, he's either got 2-5 outs (if he has KK/QQ/TT, he has 2, if he has AJ, he has 2, if he has KJ/QJ/JT/Jx, he has 5).

If I am way ahead, he might fold to a raise. If I am way behind, he will certainly call or even reraise. Furthermore, if I am way ahead, he might bet again on the turn. In general, raising in way ahead/way behind situations just lets your opponent get away from the hands that are way behind but costs you a fortune when he's got the hands that are way ahead.

NH. It's a J for sure.

but it may be J-9. i raise the flop a modest amount...if he comes back over all-in, i can fold my hand. if he calls, the money is going in on the turn whether he hits his kicker or not, as there is no way to find out at that point.

cheers!

Thanks for the replies, all. I really don't like playing huge pots with just one pair (at least I had position) but with this opponent and this board, I felt there was a very good chance I was ahead. He shows QJo, MHIG /images/graemlins/smile.gif and he leaves /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Cute. And I really think this thread shows two things very well:
1. These people simply DO NOT play trickily. When they have top pair, they lead out. When they lead out, they have top pair.
2. STOP ARGUING WITH ME WHEN I MAKE THAT POINT IN EVERY OTHER THREAD! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just feel the need to play devil's advocate so, if there are possibilities in a hand that haven't been discussed, I feel the need to state them. You'll notice I almost always use phrases like "he could...." or "with a good read of villain as _____". Standard lines are great and all but people should always be looking for other possibilities.

That's cool and all and I know you are a good player and obviously seeing all of the angles is necessary for improving as a poker player. I just feel like people over complicate things on here sometimes and forget that SSNLers play straightforwardly and that if they are check/raising you on the flop they have TPTK beat, etc.
