Return to Oz

It was too dark. Dark isn't always better.

Dorothy going to a mental hospital was over the top. Seeing Munchkinland and Emerald City in ruins didn't help.

The only time the movie get me interested was when the Gnome King revealed the secret to his power.

i can't remember much of the movie at all. i can remember when she's trapped in the room and puts that magic dust on the couch with the moose's head and it comes to live and flies out of there.

also the part near the end where she's in the room and needs to pick the right emerald or something.

oh ya, and the part in the witch's house where she has all those heads in jars. that was creepy.

the memory of those 3 scenes alone makes me want to see the movie again.

You might be someone who would enjoy reading Gregory McGuire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

The title is self-explanatory and starts just before her birth and continues to just after her death. However, it's sort of an upside-down version of Oz where the Witch is on the side of good and the Wizard of Oz is an evil dictator.

Jason and the Argonauts
The Sinbad movies
Robin Hood/ flynn's pirate movies
Classic monster movies.

Wiz of oz was always an annual deal. After awhile, though, it was just to see what they cut out.

Goonies, of course! The Neverending Story is a given. I like Reef's choice of Labyrinth as well, even though David Bowie always weirded me out.

Damn that movie was awesome.

If i had a dog as ugly as you, I'd shave his ass and teach him to walk backwards.

There's also Kuffs. Christian Slater was cool from like 1991 through midway of 1992.

haha, I used that as a fantasy baseball team name a few years ago.

My favorite movie was Super Fuzz, about a rookie cop who gets super powers by radiation. I haven't seen it in 20 years, but I must have watched it 50 times as a kid.

Alice in Wonderland -- not the Disney version. There was this like 4-hour live-action version that combined elements of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. It was kinda dark, really bizarre (duh), and the Jabberwocky was just plain scary. I think it was made for TV, but I might be wrong.

And yeah, how'd it take so long to mention Star Wars?

Edit: Here we go (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088693/)

The default was all the three star wars movies.

I like the dark crystal, return to oz as well as the labrynth. All semi dark fantasy, at least for kids movies but good. Oh, and obviously the princess bride.

But the best had to be The Never Ending Story. I can't believe no one has mentioned it besides peachy. They then proceeded to make sequels years later which were completely awful (and im not just saying that because i was much older, they were truly awful movies). I suggest everyone see that movie, a true '80's classic kids movie.

Granted, I was 12, but Space Balls is the classic for me.

Revenge of the Nerds...wow, IMDB says they are remaking it too.

Slated to come out in 2006. This definitely has potential. Potential to rule or to suck.
