so on monday my company is going to be sending out letters to us employess offering us a incentive laden package to get us to leave the company. based on my job title and my seniority i will be walking away with about 25K (half upon departure, the rest spread out monthly over couple of years) and 6 full months of benefits. now i dont dislike this particular job 'that' much, however i dont have any desire to move up and i find the day to day work quite mudane. also the current state of poker makes the move instantly more profitable per hour.

i do have worries of course, namely the future of online poker. i have seen some posts where people are saying enjoy the gravay train, the bots are coming yaadadadadada and others saying that they expect the games to be good for a long time. i am somewhere in the middle. fortunatly, the middle would be enough for me to live pretty well.

i also dont have much documented education, most of it was learned either on the streets or by reading books on my own. i was a pretty troublesome kid, and found school to be not only boring but also a hinderance to my fake tough guy lifestyle. as a result i dropped out before the 9th grade and never went back. i ended up taking my GED test once it was available to me and passed with extreme ease.

i dunno, somewhat scary move but i feel confident that even if things go horribly wrong that i made a decision to do something i wanted to do and will somehow have to start somewhere and build a carerr.

Play poker and take some college on the side. If you have no formal "income" school almost pays for itself if you go to like a community college or something. I found I enjoyed school a lot more after being away from it for awhile. Just a thought. As far as a high school diploma, I know my brother dropped out in like 10th grade, got a diploma online and now has a BA and no one has a clue. I'll look into how/where he got it.

I'm a crappy long term planner but if you convince MaxPower to drive to Foxwoods tomorrow and you show up we can tear up the 20 game.

i live near boston now, with a car and a driver's license so i'd be interested in going too. sublime don't be wussy if you want to play poker for a living try it. if pokre goes bad which it won't, it won't happen overnight, and even if it does you will not die.

I'd buy myself a 2005 Mustang and head for the Mirage. It's the only sensible move for a man in your position.

moving to vegas is a serios option, the mustang sounds great but i own a 2000 camry in pristine condition. despite having one of the biggest mouths on the east coast, i am not a very flashy guy.

Why not play poker and go to college part time? I'm sure you could juggle both and you might even enjoy the schoolin' at this point in your life. Seems like it would kill two birds with one stone - get a degree and not have an extended time of mysterious unemployment to explain to future employers if you end up trying to get another "real" job.

Three's even better and it doesn't have to cost a dime. The 12.5K he's getting up front could be a decent 20/40 b/r in Vegas.

Well, the Camry will get you there if you insist. Apartments are cheap and easy to rent. The middle limit Mirage games are easy to beat. The town is crawling with beautiful women. What could be better than that?

In that case, if you don't do this you definitely need counselling. Medication too, most likely.

Just curious--why Vegas and not LA?

sublime

Just curious--why Vegas and not LA?

could be either, leaning towards vegas due to cost of living. although once i get some good feedback on the 40/80 game at commerce i may pick LA.

i could also just stay in boston (maybe move towards the fox) a lot is dependant on just how good the games on the net stay. i mean, i love boston summers but the winters blow and foxwoods is a second class casino.

either way i have tickets to 8 red sox games this year so i wont be moving till at least late october /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

so ran what was going on by my mom and sister. both know i have done well at just about anything i have put my mind to, but neither of them like this idea. i cant blame them to be honest, but i wish i could somehow broaden thier knowledge of the subject. they will support me no matter what decision i make, but reluctantly at first i am quite sure /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hey good luck with everything bud. Like you, I didn't really like school all that much. I was an honor student though but I was really bored with it. I pretty much slept through high school and when I hit university I slept through there too. Despite being an honor student throughout, I 'barely' graduated university.
Now that I've been away from school for a while I find that I really did enjoy it. I've learned to appreciate it and had some of my best times there. Once you graduate time passes by really quick and you really do start to miss school.

Good luck with everything and keep us updated, it's very interesting.

If you eventually want to get a degree (for other jobs and what not) you could spend around 3-4k taking 2 years worth of community college classes. Unsure what it is in Mass., but any community college classes taken here, all can be transfered to a 4 year school. Many you can even take online. So if you were worried about education you could get up to 2 years (half) of your school work done. However I dont blame you if you never want to read another school textbook again.

how old are you?
what is your resume like?
what is your debt load?
do you have dependents?
do you have savings/investments?

sublime
03-26-2005, 04:43 PM
1)26

2)that job is my resume basically, i started working at a sbarro's (italian fast food) at 17 and by my 18th birthday i was an assistant manager with a furure in that company. left for my current job (verizon) and have all the customer service/data entry etc. skills that go along with a job like that.

3)owe about 4.5k on my car. thats it.

4)no

5)20k in my 401k (possibly more dependant on how the package works out that stuff. plus the 13k they give me up front that i dont really 'need' right now. i have a bankroll of about $50,000 which is used for both poker and sports betting. also a couple thousand in the bank for just basic needs i suppose.

whats your advice dr?

astroglide
03-26-2005, 05:00 PM
well, it sounds like your ability to get a great job isn't hot. if you abandon the path now it will be even harder to get back into it if you need or want to in a few years. i have no idea how good of a poker player you are or how good you are at "figuring it out" in a bigger life/success sense.

i would at least look to see what kind of jobs you think you can get and at what pay scale. i'd give consideration to becoming a realtor, i don't think it has to be full time. it shouldn't take more than 6 months or a lot of money to get licensed, and at that point you could at least buy or sell property and pocket half the commission yourself.

if you do go the poker route i would do it working toward some kind of part-time goal like owning a franchise or buying/selling/renting real estate.
