Without going to Billboard or Soundscan, what do you think is the most popular song of the 90s?

Add to my list of possibles:

My Heart Will Go On
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Macarena
Smooth

by most popular do you mean a song that everyone knows or a song that everyone likes/owns? For instance, almost everyone knows the macarena, but not that many people like it.

When I think of 90's music only one song comes to mind:

Mr. Jones by Counting Crows

I'd say "not many people liking" the Macarena is a severe understatement.

I pretty much mean a combination of those two features, with heavy, heavy radio/MTV-airplay to go with it.

ok well maybe thats just me not liking the macarena /images/graemlins/wink.gif. Probably because I feel it was so overly popularized through sporting events, weddings, etc. However, i could listen to songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit or Mr. Jones countless times without being agrevated.

my entries are:

"I Will Always Love You" - Whitney Houston

"End of the Road" - Boyz II Men

"Smells Like Teen Sprit" - Nirvana

I belive "One sweet day" by Mariah & Boyz II Men broke a beatles record for consecutive weeks at #1. I still don't think it's the most popular, but definately most successful single of the decade. I'd go with either "smells like teen sprit" or "Ironic"

What a terrible song. Most of that stuff isn't even ironic.

You're actually the first person in 10 years to realize that. Congrats.

I think it was without a doubt, 100% Macarena. Those two fuckers should have to pay with a lifetime of suffering....

Though Mo Rocca on "I Love the 90's" had a particularly funny realization of the same thing....

Is that the funny youngish guy w/ dark hair who had something funny to say about EVERYTHING? Cause if so, you're right--he rules.

"Ironic???!!" No way.

I agree with "my heart will go on," "I will always love you," and "Smells like teen spirit."

I am pretty sure that smooth by santana and rob thomas broke all kinds of records for sales and airplay. So i think that is the answer.
