Why does solid state memory (CompactFlash, Memory Stick) come in factors of 2? This question has puzzled me for a long time, and it just now occurred to me to ask. So yeah... Anyone know why?

EDIT: Also, while I'm at it, which type is the best and why?

It's about simplifying the design process. It easier to double a memory controller by connecting 2 of the same type together than design a whole new one from scratch.

Best???? Hard to answer. Compact flash is might(?) be bigger in physical size, but it's cheaper and comes in many more varieties.

EDIT: my vote is CF because of the cost/varieties. Also you can swap it w/ those tiny hard drives.

USB key drives are the best, man.

I got one that has 256MB and is an MP3 player (includes USB cable and good headphones) for $55 Canadian!
