They charge way too much for how little they put in the packages. But, it's so good. I just ate an entire package and am thinking about popping open another.

I think the real rip off is in the heart attack you'll soon get from eating so much of it.

A friend of mine, real country boy, makes his own in a "dehumidifier", I guess it's a lot cheaper, you just cut up some steak and use some seasoning mix.

You forgot the sodium, which is the real problem.

I use to have a dehumidifier, you can find one for fairly cheap. It's real easy to make jerky using it, you can make alot for fairly cheap and it's pretty good.

So you're saying if a snack food has less than 1/3 your daily value of fat and cholesterol than it's perfectly healthy?

brassnuts
02-03-2005, 05:30 AM
0.5g of fat is nothing... less than 1 percent. 20mg of cholesteral is 7 percent. Like shilly said, the only problem is sodium, and there is a lot of that.

Brainwalter
02-03-2005, 05:36 AM
cool, I'll look into it. What do you season it with?

INCORRECT.

A container, in this case, is 3 servings. You said you ate the whole thing and were thinking about another. Have you ever noticed how junk foods have "serving sizes" that are insanely small?

How much sodium is there, btw?

brassnuts
02-03-2005, 05:38 AM
I already said that there 3 servings per container. Unfortunately, a single serving had 20 percent of the daily value for sodium.

Edit: I'm not saying its 'perfectly healthy' but as far as most snack foods go, its relatively very healthy. And, still expensive for how little you get.

eric5148
02-03-2005, 05:43 AM
I'll agree that it's among the better foods available in a gas station or truck stop.

And how thirsty are you right now?

brassnuts
02-03-2005, 05:44 AM
Hehe. I'm sure I would be thirsty, but I almost invariably have a bottle of water beside me when I'm lounging around the house.

Pretty much anything.. I used garlic salt sometimes, sometimes this seasoning mix I have which is just a bunch of crap.

You can also marinade the steak prior to dehumidifying it in BBQ sauce or whatever.

Buy it at Costco if you can't make your own. It's like $10 for two good-sized packages.

The local butcher shop in my town has packs for sale at $18 per pound, really expensive. But man I would eat it all day if I could that [censored] kicks ass.

Basically, yeah, the sodium is probably the worst part of it. The fat content certainly isn't that bad.

I'm not a big fan of the large amount of preservatives they have to put in jerky either.

Here's the way I look at it. If I eat high-fat, high-cholesterol foods, then I will get blockage in my arteries. If I eat high-sodium food, I will experience hypertension, or high blood pressure. My high-pressure blood will be better able to force its way through blocked arteries than boring old low-pressure blood. Without complimenting my high-fat diet with a high-sodium diet, I would surely die young from all my blocked arteries. But by making sure all the deliciously fatty bacon I eat is also double-salted, I can negate the fat's negative effects.

*EDIT* This is why I am not a doctor.

If you go to one of the Costco Business centers (I know there's one in Fife and I believe another one in the Lynnwood area), I'm pretty sure you can get vending packs of the thin style.

Actually too much sodium every once in a while isnt bad for you. The only "risk" in eating beef jerky is all the nitrates that are in it as preservatives. Apparently they cause cancer, but what doesnt these days? I say keep eating it, beef jerky rules.
