View Full Version : What is the greatest photo of all time?

Or just, post a great photo. Sorry to be anal, but please don't post gross out or hot lady photos, they have their place, but in a different thread. I am looking for photos with "wow" factor.

I don't know how to post images, but if someone could this for me, I would be grateful. My vote goes to a photo from Vietnam. Some young Vietnamese man is being shot by a general. The photo is taken as the photo is halfway through his head. It entered via the right hand side of his body, but you can see that it his left hand side of his body that is dead, whilst the right hand side seems normal.

I like this photo a lot, it was taken in 1850 by Gustave Le Gray. It's from a negative on salt paper or something, the first time I saw it I thought it was a drawing.

It looks much better blown up, the difference between the two halfs of his body is much more evident.

Of course, this is not all down to brilliant photography. The timing involved is incredibly lucky. Still, "Wow".

I've seen this photo numerous times, and I don't think that half of his body is dead... I think that this is what a face would like whenever a bullet would enter from that side, for not just an instant but a little longer.

This was one which came to mind. Although, I don't rate it as the greatest.

It's a polaroid take by Mary Moorman at the exact moment President Kennedy is struck in the head.

The famous grassy knoll and picket fence are in the background. The photograph has been used by both sides of the Kennedy assassination debate to support and debunk arguements.

There is an oft used photo of a Chinese student defiant in the face of a procession of tanks in Tianamenn square that will stick forever in my mind. This might be vidoe footage though.

That photo is all about symbolism, but the student does run out of the way shortly after the tank approaches... something that is so often overlooked about that picture.

If you want to read something interesting on the power of a photo, read "Flags of our Fathers". It is about the famous Iwo Jima flag photo, and how it affected the lives of the soldiers in it. It also gives some truth about the photo that wasn't expressed for many years.

Am I remembering correctly that the photographer who took this picture committed suicide at least in part because of it, or is my memory from college failing me?

My recollection is that this was a Pulitzer winning photo, and the photographer received a lot of criticism for taking the photo, instead of helping the child (which probably would have been a bad idea, given the risk of disease). At any rate, if memory serves, the criticism got to him and he fell into depression and ended up killing himself.

There's an interesting story behind this one, too. The guy who took the picture was named Eddie Adams, and he regretted taking it, because he felt it unfairly portrayed the South Vietnamese police chief shown executing the handcuffed Viet Cong.

I did an quick search and found that Adams refused to display this photo in his studio, despite winning a Pulitzer for it. "Sometimes a picture can be misleading because it does not tell the whole story. I don't say what he did was right, but he was fighting a war and he was up against some pretty bad people."

That picture doesn't do that justice. From another angle which I've seen in video, the guy is in outer space more or less, you can see the blackness of space and the curvature of the earth. Totally spine tingling to watch him jump from there.

I've seen the vid on a sports show. Pretty amazing. A few people have died trying to duplicate the jump.

I haven't looked through the responses in this thread but I think you might have seen a still shot taken from a TV clip. I thought of this first but remember another (that was a photo) of a little girl running down the street naked crying in agony after a naplam attack. That was powerful.

This was the one I was thinking of in my post below. Should have browsed the responses first.
