View Full Version : Horseheads look cheap?

I have a new order in process with Pokerchips.com; the artwork is being finalized. My subject matter was driven by my wife's commments . . .

I asked her if all else were equal, colors & graphics etc., does she prefer the A-mold or the Horsehead mold? She said definitely the A-mold, because the Horsehead pattern made it look like a cheaper chip. She's not a chip connoiseur, but has some experience handling real chips from table games in casinos.

She's representative of the average casual player who will use these chips in home games. I was originally leaning Horsehead, but I could go either way since the chips otherwise look and feel the same.

Any comments out there on preference, or any similar type feedback chip owners have had?

Out of the pokerchips.com/asm molds, I like the Horsehead mold the best. To me it is similar in its simplicity to the hat/cane mold. Plus, if I am not mistaken, they Horsehead mold was used for a few casinos a long time ago. Take my advice with a grain of salt, though, as a I have a set of chips with the horsehold mold and love them. Good luck.

I like the A mold the most. I like the notched look and the A symbols are very subtle. I think it's a more classic look than the horse heads. Get samples of both and then decide. I liked the roman mold best from the pictures, but didn't like the sample at all.

I like the A-mold the best with the HH being a very close 2nd... the Roman-o is a distant 3rd. The HH mold probably has more recognition (IMO & I'm certainly no expert)... check out Mold Designs Info (http://www.antiquegamblingchips.com/molddesignindex_site.htm)

My vote is for the horsehead mold. It's always been my fave.

I like both American and HH, would have trouble deciding between the 2 if it came down to it. Don't like the Roman at all though.

I like the look of the Roman, but from what I've heard it's not as nice as the others. Looks CAN be deceiving I suppose.

HH for sure with the A mold a good second. I think you'd be very happy with either choice. /images/graemlins/spade.gif

So if you were me ( and let me stress, that you aren't me in this case) You would choose the A mold. And for this reason...I live in Atlanta hence the A has some symbolism to me.) If you find something that relates to the A, pick that mold. Other wise I like the Horsehead for its generic interpretation. I mean what does a top hat and cane have to do with the casino's that use it's mold?

Funny that Tabasco would bring this up - the only thing that bothers me about the A-mold is it reminds be of the stinkin' Braves!!!

I'm a Pittsburgh native and am still haunted by the vision of Sid Bream, the slowest man on earth, lumbering to score from second to win the NLCS. Now, if only Barry Bonds were on steroids back then in the early 90's - maybe he could have thrown him out! /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Anyway - I drifted off topic. The A-mold does kind of go with an A=Arizona/western theme theme for the inlay, but you could argue the same for a horsehead.

Even though I think the two molds are a tossup, I'm leaning A-mold. Thanks for the feedback.

P.S. by the way - Go Steelers!

I like the color combo on the $5 chip -- TCR# N1707. Looks like lt blue w/ either dark blue or black.

Though the A mold works well for my Atlanta Braves...

I'm definitely a Horsehead man!

I love walking into a game and seeing Horseheads. To me they are a sign of class, but I've been playing for decades. There seems to be a current poker-chip-marketing strategy of weighting chips--the idea being that the heavier the better--but Horseheads have the right look, weight and feel. I've always thought they were a notch better than Tophats because they seem to stay cleaner, attracting less grime.

Having said that, the "A's" are virtually the same chip, so if you like 'em better, go for it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was surprised - I liked the "A" mold better than HH.

Mighty fine chips.

One thing I noticed beyond aesthetics . . .

The A-mold chip is slightly thicker - my trusty dial caliper says .130" for A-mold, and .125" for the horsehead. The .130" seems consistent with the casino clay chips that I have such as Venetian Paulsons, and Mirage.

Correspondingly, the A-mold weighs in a touch heavier. My scale doesn't have enough precision and only shows 9 grams A-mold, and 8 grams Horsehead, but it could be something like 8.8 vs 8.4 (rounding error).

Anyway, not a deciding factor really since sensitive measuring devices are necessary to discern a difference; but mildly interesting nonetheless.
