View Full Version : Moving to Minnesota; bringing the beitzim to Canterbury!

So, the wife and I are foolishly moving to MN in the dead of winter. I'll be up 11/5 - 11/11 to take an ethics test for licensure, look for home/office space and play a lot of poker in the evenings. I usually check in as Milo, and sometimes wear my avatar on my shirt pocket (although it's too frickin cold for my avatar t-shirts, so you'll have to look for the fat, 40-ish psychologist in the CP fishing hat). Say hello to a fellow 2+2er and welcome me to the frozen tundra you call home. I expect to be in the casino from 5:30 p.m. through 1:30 a.m. all week (except Monday night, gotta study /images/graemlins/frown.gif). I'll be anywhere from 4/8 to 8/16, unless I grow some real beitzim and take a crack at the 15/30.

We are hoping to move to somewhere around Chaska/Chanhassen/Eden Prairie, and I welcome any advice/feedback via PM.

-Milo

A somewhat premature welcome to the frozen tundra. I will try to make it out one of the days you are here. I will look for you.

I am also a slightly overweight 40's guy. Bill C is my board name.

I live in Eden Prairie and I love it. It's a suburb in the SW portion of the Twin Cities but it's just far enough out that you still get lots of coutryside, trees, parks, etc. The area seems to be growing rapidly so who knows how long that will last. I like being just on the outskirts of the cities where everything is close enough to get to, but you aren't stuck in the middle of it.

Plus, if you're in Eastern Eden Praire, you are only 5 minutes from Canterbury. Well, that is if Hwy 169 isn't plugged up.

Which, come to think of it, aint all that often lately.

Cool! I'm moving to Minnesota this month as well!

My wife and I will be there on a house-hunting trip on 11/19-23 and I'll be there full time on 12/5.

I'm not sure where we are going to live yet - I'd like to be close to my office, that's for sure. My current commute is f'ing killing me and I definitely want to trim that down. So, we'll probably end up in Bloomington or Eden Prarie, etc...

I met NoChance and a couple other lurkers when I was there interviewing a few weeks back. Not sure when I'll make it in but I'll try to whenever I have the chance.

Good Luck!

Damn. I'd say I'm the guy with hair WAY too short for Minnesota, but with the hat on, well...

Last time I was there, the games were good, but not nearly as good as Vegas, where I was maybe one of one or two decent players at the table. I moved a lot, looking for that "Vegas" game I'd experienced on my trip to Mecca. I'll probably still move around a bit, as I get more acclimated to CP-style games. When that Kirsten Dunst-looking board girl calls out a table change for "Milo," that'd be me.

Hey milo,

Lookin' forward to running into you! Welcome to the Great White North, in advance (but we have GORGEOUS summers).

I'll make sure to stop and say hi sometime, although I'm one of the other huge age group - guys who look way too young to be there. Figure that out later though.

Having never been to Vegas, I dare say you won't be disappointed in the 'Bury's games these days, with what I believe to be a very good number of total LAGs and people who just generally have no idea what they're doing. Last time I was there I played with a guy at 15/30 who bought in for 200...twice. Some play well, of course, but they eventually stick out like a sore thumb.

And there's nothing wrong with seeing Lisa on the boards every now and then... /images/graemlins/cool.gif

See you around!

EDIT: Welcome to Sucka, too! Hope you guys like it up here...for where I've been, there's not a better combo of warm sunny summers and colder, snowy winters anywhere. Of course, I'm stupid enough to LIKE the cold sometimes...

I've heard that the 8/16 game is ridiculous.

You heard right - word has it its the craziest game in the house. I've only sat at it once, but I have to say what I saw definitely backed that up. There's maniacs everywhere, they just seem to gravitate toward the game that produces the biggest ocean of chips, and this is it.

Very cool. My last trip up I played from 10p-3a for three nights. Lost $40 the first night at 6/12. Won $50 the second night at 6/12 and 8/16. Was up maybe $40 at 6/12 the third night, then moved to the 4/8 and ran up 50BB in two hours. I'll take another crack at the 8/16 though on Friday or Saturday night.

Will getting there before 6p get me a seat? Last time I waited two hours the first two nights (getting in at 7:30 or 8). The last night I sat immediately because the Vikings were playing their first PRESEASON game. As rabid as Redskins fans are, you can't GIVE AWAY preseason tix.

Getting there before 6 PM should help a lot, especially with horse season over. The 4/8 and 6/12 lists should be pretty short at that time, while the 3/6 and 2/4 lists go insane between 6 and 7/8, but normally have faster turnover.

Ironically, the longest wait I've ever had? Waiting for 30/60 one night...ZERO turnover.

Thanks Edge! Look forward to meeting you...

I actually used to spend several weeks up there during the late summer when I kid. My Grandparents would rent a cabin near Marcell, MN (about 4 hours north of MPS) and we'd spend 2 or 3 weeks fishing 6-8 hours a day. Good times.

I'm really looking forward to taking my son up there. He and my wife both will love it! Waking up to the loons in the morning is a real treat...

Anyway, look forward to meeting all the 'Bury folks when we get settled in. I'm a youngish looking 34 year old blonde hair with goatee and glasses guy. I'll play as high as 15/30 but will likely spend most of my time at the 6/12 or 8/16 game.

Not ironic at all. Most people who play that game have a decent-sized bankroll, and they come to play in that game and to play for several hours. If there are two games going, the wait usually isn't too bad, but if you're the tenth name on the list when they start it, you might be waiting a while.

Contrast this with the smaller games. Most of those players have no concept of a bankroll. They bring whatever they have to gamble with and play until it's gone. For a lot of them, it's $40-$60, so they play $2/4 and bust out in an hour or three. That's why there's so much turnover there.

LOL - don't forget that the rake takes a buy-in or so per hour off the table and whittles down the amount of $$ actually in play.

$5 max rake to play $2/4. Ouch!

Both you and Milo stay away from my 6-12 game. Go play 8-16 . /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Welcome! My board name is just Chuck K, I'm the 20 year old in the 15/30 game, if by some chance that isn't enough to clarify it, I generally wear some type of sporting apparel (Vinatieri jersey at this time of season probably), also a Twins cap or a Patriots cap, depending on how messy my room is and which one I am able to find first. Sometimes I'm at the yellow chip games but mostly 15/30.

Winter isn't so bad here, then again I have never spent a winter anywhere else, but it isn't as bad as people seem to think. Summer here is better than anywhere I've been, weather is nigh perfect all summer long.

Tonight was a good night - 30/60 was open right when I got there, and while it was a little high for my bankroll, I pulled off a good session.

MaGi, you're the OTHER 20-year old in the 15 game /images/graemlins/tongue.gif, or evenb the other OTHER 20-year old when/if Schneids is playing. Gotta respect the Vinatieri jersey being a kicker myself, and watching the guy win two Super Bowls...now if only I didn't hate the Pats...

Andy - you're right, it does make sense to me. Rare is the time I've seen mind-numbing gambling in the 30/60, especially by someone who didn't have plenty to back it up. Excellent point, which had I been thinking when I posted, I would've tried to make myself /images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

Not bankrolled for the 30/60 /images/graemlins/frown.gif. I'll be at the 6/12 or 8/16.

How's the play at those lofty 30/60 heights?

That's just plain delusional. I lived in Minneapolis for five years for grad school and a little hanging on. Winter in Minnesota is harsh. Harsh.

Walking around, I have had my eyeballs feel like they froze open. As I approached doors I tried to calculate the best way to get out of gloves and fish out keys to minimize the exposure time for hands. I have found October newspapers in March that finally got exposed under melting snow. In three of those five years we had a week of subzero temperatures.

And winter lasts so long. My birthday is mid November, and in none of those five years did we reach that day without snow on the ground. My wife's birthday is late April and twice there was snow on the ground for her birthday.

Despite all that, I loved my time in Minneapolis - lots of live music, good bars.

People deal with winter and so it does not become a big issue. But it is still a worse winter than you will find in just about any other place in the nation.

Played it for the first time in a long time on Tuesday. You would be amazed at how little difference there is between that game and $6/12. There are several excellent players, and the game can be tough at times, but what sets the $30/60 game apart from the other games is that, for the most part, the $30/60 players have more money, and a lot of them don't appear to care about it.

I think summer here is too stinking hot. The winters I don't mind, and they've gotten milder in recent years. I love autumn here, this week notwithstanding, and spring is lovely.

lol. Said as if there were no other 20 year olds in that game. A good chunk of the time there are at least 3 people our age in that game (i'm 21, but it's close to 20 /images/graemlins/wink.gif )

I'd like to meet up with you guys too.

Winter here sucks, mostly because it's so damn cold. Snow here is nothing, just cold and windy. I went to school in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. My senior year, we got 360 inches of snow. It litterly snowed everyday from Halloween to Easter. Not just dusting, shovel-your-driveway-three-times-a-day snow.

But, it rarely gets below 10 F there. So I guess it's a trade off. Rather have the snow to tell you the truth.

I'm one of the only ones that I have seen who can't buy a beer after a good night at the tables, the difference between 20 and 21 is huge in that respect, but yeah, there are a few who play there, just not regulars (though for the last few months I haven't been able to play as much at Canterbury, I used to be there 4 or more times a week).
