The elevator in my apartment building has only two buttons, U and D. When you
push the U-button the elevator goes up 8 floors (or not at all if there aren’t 8 floors
available); when you push the D-button it goes down 11 floors (or not at all). It
is possible to get from any one floor to any other floor. However, if the building
had one fewer floor it would be impossible to do this. How many floors are in my
apartment building?
How would your answer change if the U-button took you up 9 floors, and the D-
button took you down 12 floors?
