I just found out about the 4 color decks on party with each suit being a different color. What do people think about these?

Wow...only no vote so far. I am a bluff old traditionalist, I guess. I can't STAND 4 color decks. It just makes it feel like I am playing freecell or something.

Freecell uses 2 colored decks.

I agree, I tried playing with them and I hated it, thats just me though as there is only 3 no votes, I think anyone who hadnt played poker before playing online would like them, because it adds some ease for them to chase flushes. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I like em...

I started using them one night when I was playing two games...one NL, and one Omaha..

I found that with 4 cards in the deck it made it easier for me to assess my Omaha situation suit wise -

live, I don't care...but online, I'm almost always going 4 color now...very kewl to see cards quickly and not make one of those "I thought I had two spades" mistakes when the 3 one comes on the river -

having said that...Planet poker has two seperate 4 color decks...the standard Mike Caro version and another one...and boy does that other one suck....Green and blue compliment red and black well tho...

nostalgia is the only reason NOT to use it

looks like im in the minority here, but I don't use them. Don't really see the point as I never have a problem distinguishing between the suits anyway

I used to hate them, but then I tried it out for longer than five minutes and now I can't go back.

Before I used them I would sometimes misread my flush related hands/boards. Now I don't.

Also, it greatly helps with determining the flush situation a little quicker, very handy for multitabling.

I started using it when playing 7 card stud... makes it a lot easier to see which cards are dead if have 3 to a flush after the ante.

The 4 color deck is AWESOME for multitabling. I dont think I'd be able to play 8 tables without the 4 color deck. The extra second to actually look at the suits after each new card is dealt really adds up when trying to act before your timer starts ticking.

I don't use it for one reason. I'm concerned I'll get too used to it and have trouble when I have to readjust to red and black in a live game.

I worry about gettting used to it too. That said, I turn em on when I have a bit too much to drink. That way it looks like a rainbow with a whole lotta pairs

Almost immidiately after starting play at UB I misplayed a few hands involving red flushes which I misread. I've since switched to four color decks at all sites save for Poker Stars where I don't seem to have that problem as their cards seem clearer.

I'm using a laptop so it may have more to do with the resoution and clarity of the screen which seems less of a problem on a decent monitor.

Live? I've yet to hear someone yell - "setup please, can you make it a four colour deck?" but I think I'd hit the floor laughing if I did.

I don't find this a problem, since I don't like to multitable live.

I love 'em. I want some four color KEM cards for use at home games.

Four color decks can only help you; why would anyone NOT use it?

If I were poker, I would be ashamed that people were playing me with a 4 color deck. It is a disgrace to the game.

I like it. why not use it anyway.

I like them. It's not a big deal in a slow live game, but when multitabling online, it's easy to misread a suit as the other one of the same color now and then. It prevents the occasional costly mistake, and it makes it quicker to distinguish the suits in any case. I still would (and do) play sites that don't have four-color decks, but I use em if they got em.

This is a strong opinion. I'll assume it is based on tradition. Being one of the younger players here, I'm suprised you would feel so strongly.

Mike Caro "donated" this invention to the poker world instead of applying for a patent and perhaps making a ton of money off of it. It was his gift to poker (his words). As Homer says, once you get past the first 5 minutes, you will feel naked without the deck. As far as the tradition aspect, it has been embraced by almost every traditionalist out there, so it is OK to make the switch.

You're right. I'll switch to use them.

Poker should be more disgusted with the anonymous nature of the bastardized interent game, which strips poker of much of its inherent human and where people play multiple games at once. After all, its the MTTing which really precipitates the need for a 4 color deck.

I thought by saying, "If I were poker" I would tip people off to the fact that I was joking.

You know, there probably is no rational reason other than decks of cards in the real world are 2 color and that's what most people are used to.

In reality, there is nothing intrinsically correct about only black and red. Same-color have no different relationship than different-color suits, so why not 4 colors? That more accurately reflects the true relationships inherent to the game.

I suspect that sometime in the not-so-distant future that all B&M decks will likely switch to 4-color. In my case, since I don't multi-table, I'd probably find a 4-color deck more helpful in a live setting where there's much more visual and other information to process than there is sitting in front of a computer screen.

Actually, it's better for the game that they stay 2 colors. Say you're drawing to a club flush. If your opponent mucks his cards a little too high, it's a lot more difficult to tell if that card that flashed was a club or a spade than it would be to tell if it were a club or a purple horseshoe.

You know I noticed this a while ago and tried it for 5 hands and didn't like it. Then I lost an extra big bet when I bet into a guy when a flush card fell, and I didn't notice it and I 3-bet him. SInce then I have switched to a four color deck.

Interesting I was at a casino on Sunday and Monday and I found out that it is pretty hard to identify the suits when you are sitting on the corner of the tables. I wish they had four color decks in card rooms.

Well, then, if this is true, then better still if all suits were black.

Let's vote for an all-black deck!
