Default 2 computer questions.

1. Can someone explain what the deal is w/ 1600 X 1200? And why is it so important? My computer only does 1280 X 1024.

2. When it comes to screen refresh rate/hertz is it the lower number that is better on the eyes or the higher number? My computer is set on 60 hertz, is that good?

Thanks

1) Standard sized poker table is 800x600. To fit 4 without overlap you need 1600x1200. It is also the best size for workstation usage anyway.

2) Higher is better, it means the screen refreshes more often. 60Hz is the at the bottom of the scale. This does not apply to LCDs (due to different technology).

1280x1024 @ 60Hz is an old / budget CRT.

1. Ok I understand.

2. I thought it was better higher. My settings mustve gotten changed b/c I was just f-ing around with them and I notice my screen was hurting my eyes and when I went back it was set on 60 and couldnt remember what was better. I just moved it back to 85 and it is much better.

Yes my computer is about 3 years old. It is definatley time for an upgrade.

As for fitting 4 tables on the screen without any overlap, does your screen have to be 19+ inches or can you fit 4 w/o overlap on a 17 in screen if it does 1600 X 1200?

It has to support 1600x1200 resolution. Resolution refers to the number of pixels, or dots, possible on a screen.

It could be a 10" monitor, as long as it can fit 1600x1200 dots on the screen it's fine.

TOSS THREAD HIJACK!

I've increased my refresh rate and my screen looks more blurry-ish. Is that supposed to be right?

No. Monitors can only support a certain Hz at higher resolutions.

My Samsung 900IFT can only do 76Hz @ 1600x1200, while it can do 160Hz @ 640x480.

I just tried changing the refresh frequency on my computer..its currently at 60, but when i made it 70 the screen just went all black. if i turned the monitor off and on again it was fine for a few seconds but then went black again. this also happens if i try to change the resolution to 1600x1200. when it is at 1280x 1024 everything runs fine.
is it just my monitor cant handle it or is there something wrong?

No. If you're using an LCD and the blurriness resulted from switching around the refresh rate, I've seen that before. Set it back. As mentioned earlier, refresh rate needing to be high doesn't apply to LCDs.

If you are experiencing this on a CRT, then turn it back down. It's difficult to diagnose the problem with no information and from afar, but I can say this: Running a CRT at a refresh rate too high can damage the monitor. I pretty much killed a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB by running 1280x1024 @ 100 hz; at 85 hz the monitor is fine.

Either the monitor or the video card can't handle the combination of resolution and refresh rate you set it to. My first thought: Is the monitor you have actually installed on the machine, or are you using the default monitor driver?
