If you are having trouble quiting for the day, you probably have a compulsive gambling problem. Discipline largely relates to throwing away junk hands and getting away from good hands that are beat. Almost all players struggle with this lack of discipline. But the lack of discipline you are talking about, of not being able to pull yourself away from the table and leave the casino, sounds more like a compulsive gambling problem then a lack of discipline. There is a big difference.

I suggest that you quit playing all together, at least for a month, one day at a time. If you can't do that, consider that you may have a problem.

The best way to deal with compulsive behavior is to go cold turkey. This way you don't have to control the behavior as much as simply avoiding it. Schedule some time with family or doing other activities that you enjoy. Stay away from the casino.

Also, consider joining a self help group or seeking individual or group counseling. Compulsive behavior is often a symptom of a larger need. I know this isn't easy, but for your own personal growth, financial well-being, and happiness, dealing with any potential issues is much preferrable to not considering the possibility.

Best wishes and let me know how it goes.

I used to have this problem for a long time. One thing that helped me was that the Harrah's East Chicago in Indiana closes at 5am. My problem then is that I would go fish style like many of the players during the last hour. Had to get even... When I went to places that were 24 hours, I also found that I would play 24+ hour sessions.

I eventually got over this problem when I decided to try to make money playing poker. I put in so many hours, then I don't have a problem leaving. I know that I'll be back tomorrow and that I'm playing one big poker session.

If you can't control yourself, then the second poster may be correct that you have a gambling problem. You may be able to control yourself, but it might take time and money...

Thanks for the advice.

I think a month off will do good for me. I'll try it.
If I cant stop play for even a month, then I know I gotta have a compulsary gambling problem?
(Which I think I have)

But that wont stop me from reading forums and pokerbooks =)

Since I am not a clinical psychologist, and you have provided very little data, I can't tell whether you have a compulsive gambling problem. However, the fact that you think you do is quite significant. That thought suggests strongly that you should consult someone qualified to give you a more authoritative diagnosis.
Compulsive gambling is extremely destructive. If you think you may have that compulsion, consulting a qualified professional can save your life.

Al

You have admitted you think you have a gambling problem. You should not continue to read forums and pokerbooks. This is akin to an alcoholic hanging around bars because he's a big fan of alcohol.

For me and I owe much of this to Dave S and John F.
Discipline comes NATURALLY for the very fact when one has a sound foundation in game thoery etc and excercises sound judgement even under adverse conditions discipline become a natural integral part of ones arsenal. I assume the player has intelligence with a blend of common sense in order for these two main concepts to be utilized fully.

Some of the things that are checked off when diagnosing an addiction are:

Have you ever lied about the amount of time spent on the behaviour in question?

Have you ever stolen to support the behaviour in question?

Does the behaviour make you feel bad about yourself?

Dammit! I just logged in to paradise poker and played a 2h session 5-10 fixed.

I couldn't make a month off!
I managed almost 48h with out playing poker. Even do I promised my self to quit play for a month. Now I really feel bad about myself.

I'll give it one more try before I go for some help.

anyway, I appreciate your replys, always feels better to talk about problems.
