Re: Young Players!!!?????
Hi,
I'm 22, and when I go to the casino, I go with some selection of friends ranging from 21 to 22. I agree that we tend to not get the respect from the older players that they "demand" from us, but I also agree that this is to our advantage. Whenever I think I might be starting to be bothered by people calling me things like "silly little kid" or "annoying punk" or whatever makes them feel better about sucking at poker, I remind myself that most of these people are old, bad, poker players, and that most of them have very unhappy lives. anyway, got to run, citanul |

Re: Young Players!!!?????
I don't think it's a respect thing, I think it's knowledge. in my experience I find the younger the player the more likely he is to bluff, and the less respect he has for the other players and his own money.
For the reasons above I am much more likely to play harder against a young player than I am against a man in his 60's who just woke up from a three round sit and fold. That being said, there are some early 20 somethings I would prefer to have at another table, because they are good players and they are fearless. That's a tough combination. |

[ QUOTE ]
I am 20 years old and have been living off of poker for almost 2 years now, I love the lack of respect I get from the old men who have been "playing cards longer then I have been alive" yet in all those years they haven't realised that QT is not a powerhouse [/ QUOTE ] Perhaps they lack respect for you because you don't know some basic stuff- such as it is unlikely they were playing hold 'em 20+ years ago. They were playing stud, lowball, or maybe some other draw game. Most young poker players do play poorly. |

Re: Young Players!!!?????
I find that this is true as I'm only 24 but still get carded. Why do say it like its a bad thing? This is an edge you won't have forever, so use it while you got it.

Re: Young Players!!!?????
Do most people (especially young men) treat alcohol in an intelligent and surprisingly mature manner when they first obtain the legal right to drink it? Well... They typically use an equal amount of brainpower when they are first allowed into casinos. 21 year olds have TONS of balls but typically not nearly as much brains, and this (of course) shows at the poker table.
You'll also get treated equally as much like an amateur when you don't deserve it. I look real young, but am far past 21, and still often get treated the same way as you describe. Older people tend to vastly underestimate young men, often calling them down because they're constantly thinking the young man is bluffing. Don't plan on getting much respect for a few decades or so. al |

Re: Young Players!!!?????
Im 27 and ive played at many casinos. People look at me and they know im a player it sucks. they say things like "you look like you can play" image can come from alot of things from how many chips you start with to how your dressed. My wife says i look pissed and serios all the time so if you want the to give you respect. look MAD. id love it if i had no respect. When i get heads up with the locals the my casino they are folding alot of hands they might not against some granny with 80$ in front of her at a 10 - 20 table. in other word i get little action in short handed pots.

Re: Young Players!!!?????
Well, I think more often than not, the poker-alcohol parallel holds true, but for a different reason. Think about it this way: Do most 21-year olds consume alcohol for their first time on their 21st birthday? Of course not. To to contrary, they have been drinking it for years, most since high school, but at least for three years already in college. At least in my case, by the time I turned 21, I was able to consume alcohol in a responsible matter -- not making a fool of myself in public, knowing not to drink and drive, knowing what my limits were. Likewise, by the time I was allowed to walk into a casino, I had a much better clue as to how to handle myself in the game than I would have if I had walked in when I was 18.
But I guess what it comes down tois that I think we all go to the card room to earn money, not respect. |

Re: Young Players!!!?????
i'm 36 so i probably stopped being young fairly recently
i have been playing on and off since i was in my teens and would agree that generally young players are poorly regarded i think young players can be very good and sometimes are - the primary reason poker appeals to me is that it is an experienced based skill - all the science in the world will not explain or replace 10 years experience of playing the game |

Re: Young Players!!!?????
I think that young guys (Im 30 so im one of them) in everything including poker are over enthusiastic and rush into things. In my local card room the "elderly" players dont take risks,if they call you down they have a good hand. Its not really about age though its about expierience, the more expierienced you are the less energy you expend achieving the same goal.I for one respect the "aged" players i play against but i dont fear them, they are falible.

Re: Young Players!!!?????
I'm only 19, so I've experience the same kind of mentality toward me from my opponents when I play B&M. I don't mind the lack of respect at the table because I'm able to take advantage of it. However, there is a reason that "older" players have this mentality: young players usually do suck. Not because of their age, but because of their lack of experience. That and their desire to spout of Rounders lines and make plays they saw on the WPT last night.
