Default Good or bad hold \'em books

In Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players the authors claim
that "most of this material [the hold 'em literature] is
either not accurate or extremely lacking in many aspects of
the game".

Is it known which books they are referring to? How about
Krieger's Hold 'em Excellence and More Hold 'em Excellence,
Jones' Winning Low-Limit Hold 'em, and Ciaffone's & Reuben's
Pot-Limit and No-Limit Poker?

They are NOT talking about the Ciaffone Pot-limit book you mention. Mason Malmuth gave that book a very high rating.

As for Jones (new edition) & Krieger; he gave them so-so ratings IF my memory is working.

Robert Zahrobsky's "Complete Guide to Hold'em", Carl Anderson's " "Hold'em Poker for Winners", "Properties of Hold'em Hands" by Chip Johnson & Ray Tayek, Mike Caro's "Pro Hold'em Report", TJ & McEvoy's "Championship Limit Hold'em" and (the I believe out of print) "Fool Proof" by Richard Allan are some examples of hold'em books or reports that were deemed awful.

Hope that helps.

Howard

Lee Jones book is pretty good, just not to descriptive as HEFAP, then again its for low limits which it does its job for.

Hi ZMan:

The original edition of Jones's book I gave a rating of 4 to which is not very good. The current edition I have improved the rating to 7. For me to recommend a book it needs a rating of 8. So I still consider the current edition of Jones to be somewhat marginal, but it is much improved over what was originally out there.

Best wishes,
Mason

Default question for mason

when you are rating a book, do you look at the intended audience before giving it a rating. HEFAP vs the Lee Jones book, i feel have differnt audiences. Is this considered?

My brother says Hi. He thinks it is cool I talk with Mason.

Hi Rusty:

I consider the purpose of the book and whether it acomplishes that objective.

Best wishes,
Mason
