Default McCain can\'t lose in 2008

Assuming he gets the Republican nomination, I don't think that McCain can lose the presidency in 2008. The only
hope for Democrats is to say he is "just another Bush" but I doubt this will fly.

I'll post my reasons for this opinion, but first I'd like to see some comments.

He will never win the republican nomination. He is too gay, too baby killer, and too socially reasonable. These issues carry huge republican voting blocs.

Of course he would kill Hilary Clinton, but he wouldn't make it there.

Unless he made some flip-flops and hired Karl Rove maybe.

Three things re prior poster:

1. McCain has always been pro-life.

2. Against gay-marriage.

3. "Socially Reasonable" will be a plus in 2008, in my
opinion, even with the right-wing.

On the first point, during the 2000 primaries, McCain said he opposed overturning Roe V. Wade because it would force women into back alley abortions. He claims he is anti-abortion, but when you listen to what he says about it, it would be easy for people to question as to what his actual beliefs are. Does he really oppose abortion, or does he just adopt that position because he thinks it is politically expedient.

Wouldn't it matter to you if abortion was an issue that was of great importance to you..no matter what side you were on? When a candidate takes an official position on an issue, then makes comments that seemingly contradict that stated position, why wouldn't that matter to anybody concerned about the issue? If that person becomes President, are they going to stick with their official position, or will they feel the freedom to govern according to their actual beliefs (assuming they are different from their stated position).

Both President Reagan and George HB Bush said they were committed to overturning Roe V. Wade. Combined, they appointed 5 Supreme Court Justice..3 out of 5 voted to uphold Roe.

Default As a Democrat

John McCain could change his public opinion on a couple of key issues and easily win the Democratic nomination -- but that won't work with Republicans. If on the ticket as a Republican, it's very possible he would win -- because he could easily bring more Democrats into his camp than the number of Republicans he would alientate -- but that would require moving the center of the Republican party in a way we haven't seen since Goldwater.

His getting the nomination is problematic, because some right winger will probably try to smear him like Bush's staff did during the 2000 campaign.

You mean, John McCain IS mentally stable!? You mean, he DIDN'T father a black baby!?!?

Bush staged a smear campaign against McCain? Puh-leaze! I don't believe it. Bush is a true man of character. Neither he, nor his campaign, would ever propagate such things, if they weren't true.
