Default Re: CRT vs LCD, price conscious

This article is a review of lower-end LCDs and CRTs. It has some really interesting info on the differences between the two, and even evidence that a new CRT is of worse quality than a 5-year old CRT. It can get really technical, but its pretty good about putting stuff in layman's terms (hell, I understood most of it), and it definitely helped me gain an understanding of some of the differences between CRT and LCD, as well as the reviews of 8 different monitors.

og5, how is the display quality on the refurb CRT monitor you posted a link to?

I would think it would be pretty good. It does 1600x1200 at 85hz so that should be good on the eyes.

Thats the same resolution as the Dell 2001fp LCD at a much cheaper price.

...as a side note, I'm not really informed on how a LCD is better than a CRT other than space savings.

I am price conscious too. I would suggest buying one that would allow you to multi table with no overlap, which you can't do on the 17" LCD. I bought a 21" CRT for about 225. It was tooooooo BIG and HEAVY and took up my whole dinning room table. Because of this, I splurged and got the 2001fp (504). I think it depends on your goals. If multi-tabling without overlap wasn't my goal, I would have kept my 17 inch monitor and been content. I would suggest you do the same. Get a 1200x1600 if you want to multi table. Get a CRT if size/weight doesn't matter and go LCD if it does. Good luck.

I've heard the display quality on those sony trinitrons is pretty good but I can't get my settings to look that great. If you can adjust them better they'll look okay, but the colors and sharpness don't oome close to my laptop LCD. (LCD display is way better IMO) The monitor is blurry enough that you can see the bet sizes ok but not the chat text without squinting. The refresh rate might actually be fine for you but I've always been sensitive to CRTs
