First time staying downtown in Vegas - advice

I have stayed at the Nugget and the rooms are fine. You will be pleased with the hotel.
Accomodations are much better than low end strip and off-strip imo.

Only problem is you will feel like you are 100 miles from the strip. Just be prepared for that.

I stayed there once, and it was fairly nice, but calling it a 4-Star is a stretch. Check out the Freemont Street Experience and bands and there was a pretty good street spray paint artist there this summer too. We did it the one time for the downtown experience and I don't expect to venture there again. When in Vegas the Strip is the nuts.

I find it amazing how people will do whatever they can to save $50-$100 on accomodations and travel and then plop a $100 on red while strolling through the casino.

To each his own. But for the $150 you are saving staying at the Nugget, you could skip 10 minutes at the tables and stay somewhere much nicer and on the strip (Monte Carlo, Treasure Island, Luxor...) But then again, I understand the need for action and if you like downtown, the Nugget is the place.

Just don't stay there to long. All the ambulance guerneys going in and out to get the old folks with bad tickers might be a tad distracting [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

Everytime I have stayed off of the Strip I have spent more than what I saved in lodging on cab fare back and forth to the strip.

I love downtown, but I'm from hawaii, so that's to be expected. if you like asian/sushi buffet type restaurants, check out Makino's at the new outlet mall. same style as Todai, but much better food.
the brewery at Main Street kicks out some good beer and the bar food type offerings are pretty good.
