Edit On second thoughts just buy new shirts eac time, much less hastle and cheaper longer term.

whenever i line dry my cotton shirts come out sort of hard and brittle. but it is likely because the laundry machines near me are [censored] terrible.

Iron them. The shirts will loosen up and look great.
