Default Inspiron 9300 questions??

I've decided to purchase a Dell Inspiron 9300 and have a couple of questions, as I am not a "computer guy". First off I intend to use it soley for poker. I need four tables with no overlap. I use pokertacker and have a rather large database, as well as playerview.

The basic Inspiron 9300 comes with the following which can be upgraded.

A 17" XGA dispay which can be upgraded to the UXGA display. Worth it? whats the differance?

256 MD memory. Can be upgraded to 512, 1GB or 2 GB. Do I need to upgrade?

Hard drive 40GB standard. Can upgrade to 60, 80, or 100GB. Recommendations?

Sound card. Do I need one?

Video card. 64MB standard, can upgrade to 128 or 256MB.

Keep in mind when making your recomendations that my only real interest is multitabling. Thanks in advance for any help.

[get the most expensive monitor upgrade available]

256 MD memory. Can be upgraded to 512, 1GB or 2 GB. Do I need to upgrade?

[1 GB probably best]

Hard drive 40GB standard. Can upgrade to 60, 80, or 100GB. Recommendations?

[It's cheap to upgrade, but 40GB is sufficient even for pretty extensive PT databases and that is the only hard-drive intensive application you've described]

Sound card. Do I need one?

[not sure. standard should be fine. multi-tabling i rely on the beeps, but if it does just that, i dont care about anything else]

Video card. 64MB standard, can upgrade to 128 or 256MB.

[i think standard is fine]

I am not a huge computer guy, but these answers should be decent. I assume this is for traveling, because i would say that 2 1600X1200 monitors and a desktop kills any possible laptop setup around....

The Dell 9300 can be ordered with WUXGA graphics (1920x1200). THis allows for 4 tabling without overlap with some additional screen available on the side. ALternatively you cna now 6 table without too much overlap.

Get the screen upgrade or get a different laptop.

Get as much memory as you cna afford. 512 is a low minimum. I have 1GB. THis is standard laptop RAM, it thus can be added later and from a source other than Dell. With the 35% coupon I had though it was just as cheap to just get it from Dell.

I got the 7200 RPM HD for some extra speed. But the 40 GB base option is fine. If it's $20 more for 60GB I'd go for it.

Get the fastest processor you can afford too. THere is a price curve to look at. The upgrade to 1.7 GHz is not bad, to 1.8 a little more painful. I got a 1.8 chip. Felt it was too much of a premium price for 2 GHz.

Get wireless G for sure.

All else is extra in my opinion - get if you like: DVD writer, carrying case, etc, etc. I loaded mine up with all kinds of nifty stuff, but for poker you really need the following for sure:

- higher res
- decent processor
- lots of RAM (WinXP requirement really)

I also got the GForce graphics card since I have a 24 inch LCD capable of 1920x1200 too.

The UXGA screen upgrade is a must if you want no overlap. 512MB is the minimum memory you want. 1GB is better. Any harddrive size is fine really. The 80GB generally has a good price/size ratio. Don't upgrade the sound card. Don't upgrade the video card (only needed for graphically demanding games). Get the fastest CPU that seems priced well. The 2GHz is way too expensive just like the best CPU almost always is. The 1.7GHz and 1.8GHz are both reasonably priced upgrades.

Yes. That screen is 1920x1200. You need 1600x1200 to 4 table with no overlap. The extra 320 pixels should allow for 6 tabling with some overlap.

Is there really that big of a noticable difference between the
1.7 and 1.8 processor? Also is the processor easily upgradeable down the road? Just wondering cause I got the smalest processor they offered, the 1.6.

can this 600 off be combined with the 20% inspiron notebooks that they show on the website? when i try to apply the coupon it takes off the discount shown on the site. I have seen some incredible deals that people have shown on here and just wondering if it is combinable somehow
