Fancy Play Syndrome. Doing something overly complicated in what is usually a failed attempt to win a pot.

Or doing something overly complicated in a failed attempt to build a bigger pot in a hand that you do win. Fancy Play syndrome includes check raising or slow-playing when it is better to just bet or raise, excessive bluffing, excessive free card raises, etc.. In general, deceptive moves should be used against players who have a clue and pay attention to what you do. In games with clueless loose-passive players, they usually end up either costing you bets or costing you entire pots (for example your check raise attempt get checked through and the free card you give to an opponent who would have folded wins the pot). Even against observant opponents, getting too tricky too often can cost you money. Tricky plays work best when not used too often.
