folding big pocket pairs preflop
I was in a live 10/20 game with a fivebet cap sitting in the cutoff. LAG raises UTG, good, thinking player 3bets him. I think the thinking player's range of hands to 3bet is wider because he wants to isolate the LAG. However, an unknown who hadn't gotten too out line then fourbets. I fold JJ in the cutoff.
1) Does this seem reasonable? 2) I mentioned this play to one of my friends, and he asked if I'd fold QQ. I wasn't sure, but thought I might as well. Comments? I feel like I'm definitely ahead of the LAG, and most likely ahead of the good thinking player, but the unknown's raise means that calling fourbets to (probably) catch a set doesn't seem like good math to me. Of course, if unknown shows AK, I'd feel pretty disgusting. |

Re: folding big pocket pairs preflop
I think it was a good fold. With QQ it would be closer but I'd probably muck it too since this was a live game. Online would be different as I've never mucked QQ preflop in a limit game online.

Re: folding big pocket pairs preflop
With pocket Js, I'd call all raises and at least see the flop. If I dont catch the set on the flop and no Ace, King or Queen shows up, I'd bet or raise(if there is a bet) to find out where I stand. I'd fold to a reraise but otherwise since I've got position, I'd check-call to the river assuming no bigger cards show up or no 4 flush or 4 high straight cards show up on the board.
