I think this is one of the most amazing movies of all time.

It is about gang wars and 3 vato locos that is searching for something that isn't there. Movie start of with the 3 vatos in east LA who part ways due to gang related crimes. They each go different path's with miklo going to jail, paco becoming a cop and cruz starts to do hard drugs. But their life cross paths over and over again.

It is about belonging somewhere, about "familia". Based on true life experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca and directed by Taylor Hackford (The Devils Advocate).

Fun to know that the prison scenes shot in San Quention involves only 7 actors I think, the rest are inmates of San Q.

Check out American Me. American Me is more explicitly the story of the Mexican Mafia but I think Blood In Blood Out is also telling some of that story. The white guy in American Me is not half Mexican, he was a white guy raised in the barrio, but he was a real person and just as powerful as Miklo was in the second half of Blood In Blood Out. Very gritty movie, even darker than Blood In Blood Out. Reportedly, Edward James Olmos was threatened by them for his portrayal of one of the leaders.

Oddly enough, this movie is extremely popular in Scandanavia. Check out the locations of the reviewers on imdb.

Baca and Olmos were (are?) on opposite sides in the Mexican Mafia thing. They hate each other.

vato locos - lol. i loved this movie growing up but im pretty sure it would be pretty lame now. i also think boyz n the hood did better what that movie was trying to do

Is that the one where Benjamin Bratt is a gangbanger that leaves to join the Marines, then comes back as a cop? That part of the movie got very little play in the final edit, but I was working in the Marine Public Affairs Office at the time, and I was the USMC consultant for that part of the movie.
