I've always thought of a "nit" as someone who is a mediocre poker player but who thinks of himself as much more. Someone who knows the general ins and outs and thinks that makes him a great player who is worthy of dispensing advice to other players, especially following a bad beat, but the point is that they don't seem to understand that the advice they're doling out to make themsevles appear knowledgeable is common knowledge to most at the table.

Kind of like Plato's sophists...
