Default Dell 2001fp Monitor...computer question

So I'm just about to make the big buy and get the much talked-about Dell2001fp monitor (screen resolution - 1600X1200) so I can multitable without overlap, 'cause my screen resolution tops at 1268X1024 (or something like that) and I call Dell to make sure that the monitor is compatible with my computer - which is a Dell Dimension 2400 and the guy says that I won't be able to get the full resolution. So, I ask if I can get a video card, and he wasn't sure that would work, and that I probably need to get the Dell 4700 computer and even with that I would still need a video card.....so, any thoughts? Do I really need a new computer? Why can't a different video card just be installed into my present computer? Thanks.

Can you change settings now on your current monitor to 1600x1200? I only ask becuase your card has to be capable of 1600x1200.

You may want to call Dell back too. Even though I have found their customer support very good (sometimes long hold times though), you may get a different answer from someone who knows a little more.

Hope this helps.

No. My current monitor can only go as high as 1280X1024.

The guy at Dell lied to you. A Dimension 2400 can do 1600x1200, assuming it's got a Cel 2.4ghz and uses a onboard Intel video card.

If you had a monitor that could go to 2000x1600 your video card could most likely support that. Even though you most likely have a cheeseball onboard video card it should still be able to handle 1600x1200.

Just check that your computer has an AGP slot. Celerons don't always have this. Even if not, I think you could still get a PCI card. Either way, you can get AGP/PCI video cards for well under $100 (even ones that will do dual monitors). I assume that's not a problem since you are already spending $600 on the monitor.

If its fairly new (I think the 2400 is) I was looking at the case last week on their website and it appears that it has 3 PCI slots in it, you should be able to buy a card and put it in, you should be able to use that card for the resolution for that monitor, it is your monitor that limits this.
Try

Right click on desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > Monitor > Click "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display"

Click "Ok" then close the top window and see how far right your resolution will go, (DO NOT SET YOUR MONITOR TO ANY OF THESE SETTINGS, WHEN YOU ARE DONE, CLICK THE "X" TO CLOSE THE WINDOW AND NOT CHANGE THE SETTINGS.) This should show you how high your video card will allow resolution.

It shipped two days early (from what was originally stated on the website). I got it 3 business days later. It shipped from Texas and I live in North Dakota (no jokes please).
