I don't have the bankroll for 20/40 but it's a better game than 10/20

I'm talking about Brantford. I used to play 10/20 there but the last few days I've played 20/40 and been up +$2000 and then +$1200 the next day. I used those winnings on something else and now have only 1k to play.

i was thinking that you must mean brantford before i even saw that you're from the toronto area :P

the 20/40 isn't necessarily a better game than the 10/20. it's certainly more LAG. in the 20/40, people play way too many hands preflop, generally ignoring position and whether the pot has been raised or not. people capping with 53o and other such wonderful hands isn't all that uncommon. the pre-flop play is atrocious.

the postflop play, though, is quite aggressive, and often the pot is huge after getting capped 7 ways preflop so people will chase with any draw (and be correct to do so), so pots get huge.

if you go by pot size, it looks like an absolutely amazing game, but despite that, the 10/20 players are so terrible post-flop that i'm certain the 10/20 game is an easier game to beat. the 20/40 players are way too loose pre-flop, but in general they're not morons.

and as i'm sure you can imagine, the swings in that game are rather large. you'll often see terrible players walking off with $4-5k in profit for the night.

so... if you only have $1k to play with, and you're at all concerned about losing it, don't play the 20/40. it can literally be gone within an hour. i'm down about 66BB in my last 3 sessions myself.

I don't understand you said you have a bankroll of 30K but only have a 1K to play with?
If you have a bankroll of 30K its worth a shot of 25bb to play in the 20/40.

You just won $3,200 and now you only have $1k left? Have you spent the remainder of your $30k in winnings already, too? I think you need to earmark some of your poker winnings to use as your working bankroll. You don't want to end up trying to work your way back at the $.50/$1 tables...

IMO playing in a game you don't have the roll for is a recipe for disaster. If you can't view each bet as simply a bet (as opposed to actual $$$) then you won't play well. I played 20 hours of 8/16 at a good table and lost 105 bets. I am not a great player (I'm not a moron either), so maybe 35 of them were because of my idiocy, but that is still 70 bets. Swings happen.

I agree. Typically, if I am going to take a shot at a larger game--which I think most players should do from time to time, provided they can stand to lose part of their bankroll--I will take say 20BB's into the game and tell myself "I will play for x amount of time."

The money I have made from poker is not put into a bankroll for poker. I usually spend it on other things and keep a small working bankroll. Just because I have won some cash doesn't mean I ever plan on losing 10k+ ever playing mid limit cash games. At the present time I have a 1k working bankroll and wanted feedback on whether I should risk it playing 20/40 over 10/20 becuase it is a much better game. Is that too hard to understand?
