If you figure your opponent to have A789 (or anything similar) you hope that he checks behind you and that the turn is a T,J,Q or K. Otherwise, muck.

One caveat I would add, is that if you think your opponent has A2xx, you can bet and win the pot right there (if your read is right). While this might not pertain to the orignial hand because it was only 5 handed, there are a lot of weak/tighties in a full game who won't raise without an A2 in their hand.

In Cappelletti's O8 book, one thing that he points out is that hands with big pairs play well heads up.

Actually, that’s not what he says.

He says a hand like 8854 (a pair and two low cards) play significantly better head to head than they do multiway. He goes on to say that a hand like KQQT (4 hi-only cards, even with a pair) are a still an underdog to a random hand.

Just looking at the % win rate when run hot and cold is a bit misleading. You really need to look at how much you’ll win when you win vs. how much you lose when you lose. For that reason, I think KQQT plays better than A789, since KQQT can get some flops it likes and jam, but easily fold when it misses. A789 will not get many flops that it loves, since most great flops will give someone else a low or better high.

It certainly doesn't beat the bejeebers out of it. A789 is only a 53% favourite.

Cue Ball - I stand corrected.

I pulled the hands out of the deck as described and went through 16 boards made from the stub. Must not have been enough trials, because the A789n hand really clobbered the TQQKd hand.

But you're correct. It's actually not really all that much better.

From twodimes.net:
As7c8d9h e.v. = 0.535
QsTsKcQc e.v. = 0.465

Doesn't change my contention that TQQKd is not a very good one-on-one hand.

I tried to pick a hand that was junk but that at least had an ace. Note that As7c8d9h is no gem.

But thanks for the correction. Indeed A789n doesn't beat the beejeebers out of TQQKd. It merely is a better one-on-one hand.

I totally agree with you. It just shows that one of the worst possible low hands still wins heads-up.
