Blue 9 is an obvious and somewhat mediocre ripoff of In N Out. I like Corner Bistro but I don't like the wait.

I think Old Town has quality burgers. And Prime Burger in midtown, but you must request that they make you a fresh burger.

Generally, however, NYC has fairly crappy burgers compared to San Francisco. Bistro Burger, Moe's, Sliders, etc. And I loved Hamburger Mary's.

2nd Old Town.
I really think its the best burger and fries you get in the city. I work across the street, so maybe I'm a little biased.

Coffe Shop on Union Sq West makes a good burger too, but I've never eaten there sober, so I'm not sure if that is a factor. Plus its always full of yuppies.

El D,

I think the one burger I had at Burger Joint in Le Parker Meridien was arguably the best burger I've ever had.

It is so completely simple and straightforward. It's exactly the right size too... filling but not a total monstrosity, almost encouraging you to order a second one.

Problem is the damn lines are too long after GQ ran that burger piece.

I wouldn't dismiss those out of hand. They have some good ideas, and if nothing else, gives you a place to try and then decide for yourself. But I hear ya. Try the DB one.

And two locations.

This thread got megantw excited and we'll be going to Old Town tonight. They also have very good fried calamari with a dipping sauce that is horseradish-y and therefore yummy.

Also, I can't believe I didn't remember these places:

Union Square Cafe is said to have an excellent, fairly inexpensive burger but only for lunch.
21 allegedly uses duck fat in their burgers. Genius.

Duck fat would certainly contend for my favorite kind of fat.

i've gotta agree here, except about the waiting, because you can actually call ahead and cut the line.
