Checkraised while holding AA
10-handed Live 1-2 NL game I have about 800 and have the villain covered (about 725). UTG calls, MP1 calls, Villain in MP3 makes it $25 to go. CO folds, I call $25, blinds fold, UTG and MP1 call. ($103 in the Pot)
I probably should have reraised preflop to better define my hand. Especially given the skill of this player, it would have made the hand much easier to play in the later streets... Villain was the biggest stack at the table (after me), and one of the better players. Last time he raised to $25 preflop, he showed down AA. I put him on JJ-KK maybe AA(AA much less likely cuz I had them), AK, AQ, but he is entirely capable of raising light to mix up his play. Flop: Q-6-3 (rainbow, suits are pretty much unimportant) UTG checks MP1 checks, Villain bets $50, I raise to $150. UTG folds, MP1 folds, villain calls $100. (Pot: $403) Turn: rag. Villain checks, I bet $100, Villain checkraises $200 on top... Hero... Perhaps I should have bet a little more on the turn (half the pot?)? What if hero had KK in the same situation? Thoughts? All comments appreciated. |

Perhaps I should have bet a little more on the turn (half the pot?)? [/ QUOTE ] Perhaps you should have checked the turn instead. I like your flop bet, but when he calls it's not so great. You have position, use it. The problem with betting the turn is...if he has a set of Queens you lose everything; he might get away from a hand only drawing to a couple outs against you, etc. Free cards aren't that damaging and you keep the pot size manageable. On the end, call a reasonably sized bet or bet for value if checked to. BTW, if you're going to bet the turn, you should have bet more. When you make it 150 on the flop, then only bet 100 on the turn, it may seem to your opponent that you're chickening out. This makes the poss. of a bluff raise more likely. Jeff |

Re: Checkraised while holding AA
Agree. You should have reraised pre-flop. Having said that, I think you're ahead. He's either got KK or AQ. I would be very surprised if he has a set of queens given the check raise. If he did, he's smooth call you. I'd push all in.

pushing here sucks. [/ QUOTE ] Agreed. I think if you push you ONLY get called by QQ. He either has AQ, KK or QQ - and I highly doubt it's AQ. Check behind on the turn. |

Re: Checkraised while holding AA
Checking behind on this turn is definitely advisable. Keeping this pot small on a drawless board is nice.
I think you are behind QQ here, as raise PF,underbet flop, call raise, and CR turn looks a lot like top set to me here. Lay this down and grimace, remembering why to check behind on the turn in these spots. -T |

Re: Checkraised while holding AA
Yeah, keeping the pot small is probably a good idea, thus checking through the turn was probably the optimal play in this situation. Or since I decided to bet, to bet more, to not have it seem like a scared bet.
Thanks for the commentary. |
