Re: My new acroymn: WAFG
"Main Entry: ac·ro·nym
Pronunciation: 'a-kr&-"nim Function: noun Etymology: acr- + -onym : a word (as NATO, radar, or snafu) formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term; also : an abbreviation (as FBI) formed from initial letters : INITIALISM - ac·ro·nym·ic /"a-kr&-'ni-mik/ adjective - ac·ro·nym·i·cal·ly /-mi-k(&-)lE/ adverb" That's interesting. I was taught by several different english teachers growing up that acronyms had to something you can pronounce as though it were a word - like N.O.W. for National Org. of women or S.A.D.D. That F.B.I. was in there is intersting. . . so, ok then - WAFG IS an acronym. . |

Re: My new acroymn: WAFG
"Some have erroneously extended the term acronym in meaning to describe all abbreviations made from initial letters, regardless of pronunciation."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym EDIT: you can't say WAFG is or isnt an acronym just on sight. WAFG could be an acronym if you PRONOUNCE it like single a word rather than say each letter. so if it's "waffegah" and not W-A-F-G then you're good. |

Some have erroneously extended the term acronym in meaning to describe all abbreviations made from initial letters, regardless of pronunciation. [/ QUOTE ] If society as a whole decides that a word means something, then that's what it means. There are no grammar gods that hand down definitions of words. The MW entry for podium now includes "lectern" as a subdefinition. At one time a podium was something you stood on, while a lectern was something you stood behind, but the incorrect usage of "podium" has become so popular that it's now considered correct usage. |

Screw Wikipedia (although it's right). When it comes to words you have to go to the Oxford English Dictionary for the final say. Acronym - A word formed from the initial letters of other words. So if you say wah-fug then it's an acronym. If not, it's not. |

End of story..... But yeah..no need for another one. |
