poor advice.

Huh? You think if you're coming up 78 from Bama it's better to go all the way up to Olive Branch and take 302 across (then backtrack south) than to go 304 through Hernando? You've got to be kidding.

Actually, when I lived in Tuscaloosa (1999-ish), I would take 78 to Tupelo, then cut across to Batesville, then take I-55 up to Hernando. 302 has gotten considerably worse since then (my dad lives in Olive Branch).

No, I'm not.
But I've only lived here all my life, and made that drive a few hundred times.

If you were going to Sam's Town, Harrah's, or Hollywood, you might consider going through Hernando. But even then, I wouldn't be going through Batesville.

Goodman Rd. can be a zoo, especially during rush hours, but it is still the best way to get to Grand or Horseshoe.

Cheers,
JTrout

Well, I lived in Memphis for 25 years, and I've had family in Olive Branch for most of that time.

Look at a map. Going all the way up to Goodman, cutting across, then going back south, even if there is no traffic and you hit every green light perfectly, is still going to be a LOT of extra miles, and the speed limit is lower than on my route. In the real world, rush hour or not, you're going to hit some traffic around 78 and some more around 55 (i.e. anywhere within a five mile radius of a Wal-Mart).

OK. You go your way, and I'll go mine. (and the way mapquest recommends)

You are in Atlanta? Just go to Vegas. I'm pretty sure you can fly to Vegas from Atlanta for damn near free. You'll have more fun than any place in MS, for sure. And you'll not pay much more.

It will cost you more, but you'll get more value for your money.

Goodman road is a zoo. Between US 78 and US 61, there are approximately 40 xillion traffic signals.

I've lived in Southaven and Olive Branch nearly all my life and I agree Goodman Road is a zoo nowadays.

Coming from Birmingham, it would seem that Hwy 6 (from Hwy 78 near Tupelo) to Oxford, MS (I've never been on that part of Hwy 6 between Tupelo and Oxford) would be better. From Oxford, Hwy 6 is a divided 4 lane highway over to I-55 at Batesville, then up to Hwy 304 in Hernando directly to Tunica (Robinsonville, MS actually; the town of Tunica is south of the casinos) would be a better route than to go all the up to the Memphis/Southaven/Olive Branch area then back down to Tunica.

Just got back from Tunica, and noticed the back and forth between you guys. I live in AL, and have been driving to Tunica a couple a times a month, for about a year now.

For what its worth, I come up Hyw 78. Most everyone I know goes to Olive Branch to 302 to cut over. One of the 1st weekends I went, we got caught in some terrible Sat. afternoon traffic on 302, and decided to find another way.

That's when we started cutting off at Byhalia to Hernando(304) to Tunica. We pretty much go this way all the time now. A couple of weeks ago I decided to go one way, and come back the other. 304 is shorter mileage, but 2 lane roads through the country...302 almost all 4 lane, but terrible traffic at times.

Results of my very unscientific experiment...they're both about the same...very dependent on couple of things: how you catch the traffic on 302 and if you get caught behind a horse trailer on 304. I didn't save/lose 5 minutes either way.

On a purely personal note, I prefer 304 through Hernando.

Man, there's a really great restaurant on that road in Alabama past Jasper going north, but I can't remember what it is....I might have to call someone in Jasper now to ask them, because it was really great...

The Boar's Butt? That's in Winfield, or Guin, or Gu-Win, somewhere in that area. "Off in the Woods..."
