Anyway I get dealt J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]T [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] as BB and check after the above limp.

I'm shocked it was checked around all three times. But, since it was checked around on flop and turn, I would have bet something at the river. Maybe I would have made a small bet hoping to get raised...but would have bet something at it. I completely see why you did what you did, but it was checked around the two times before. You may have gotten a call from third pair or something if you didn't overbet it and would have at least picked up a bit more. Think of it this way...your not expecting to win anything on the BB, this was a bonus!

It was embarrasing to say the least. My feeling was if I made a big bet, all would fold, if I made a small bet I'd get a caller or 2 but noone would raise. If I checked I might get someone taking a stab at it with a pot-ish sized bet.

I'd have made some sort of attempt at it, if they all fold then they don't get to see your hand and wonder if you were stealing or not. You'd likely get a call from a pair QQ's or so.
