Default Kido Pham call from WSOP Circuit - insane?

Date / Time: 2005-11-21 20:08:00
Title: Ricky Zilem Eliminated in 17th Place
Log: Kido Pham raises to $7,000, and Ricky Zilem calls. The flop comes Jh-10d-4h, Pham checks, Zilem bets $20,000, Pham raises to $60,000, Zilem reraises all in for $135,600, and Pham thinks a while before calling with 6h-2h (flush draw). Zilem shows pocket queens (Qc-Qh), and he asks the dealer to keep it honest. The turn card is the 3d, but the Kh on the river completes Pham's heart flush. Ricky Zelim is eliminated in 17th place, and he's visibly upset by the call, saying "That's a lack of respect, man." After he leaves the table, off to give his ESPN exit interview, Jennifer Harman comments, "That was intense."

Doesn't this seem like a crazy gamble to take at this stage of a tourney where only 9 get paid? The two were both top 5 in chips within ~10k of each other. Crazy play from Pham? Discuss.

What's so insane about making a call where you're getting 3 to 1 on a 2 to 1 dog?

Ironically, you can make a case for everything but the call to be insane.

You're basically making the argument that you should put your entire tournament life on the line anytime you flop a flush draw. Not a very good plan.

i dont know it seems like the aggressive player whose willing to take a chance does better in these tourneys. just because he played his flush draw this way this time does not mean he always does. maybe he thought he could move his opponent off the hand pretty easy.

I understand the pot odds, but you think it's wise to do that for a 6-high flush draw?

You're right.

I prefer to make a fort out of my chips and hide inside only to come out when I have a big pocket pair, then savour the victory of making 1.35 x buyin after I fold into the money, secure in the knowledge that I never put my tournament LIFE on the line until my last hand. FUN!!

Folding a 2-1 shot getting 3-1 on your money isn't preservering your **TOURNAMENT LIFE**, its actually the opposite.

Woodguy
