Default UB \"cashmas\": Where\'s the money?

Here is a self-explanatory email I sent to UB member services last night:

I would like to know why you are advertising "money added" tournaments ("the 12
days of cashmas") but then not adding the money into the prize pool.

For example, tournament #145663, December 21 2005 8:00PM, is advertised as
having a Cashmas add-on of $1,500
(http://www.ultimatebet.com/promotion...f-cashmas.html). But where is
the add-on? It is a $40+4 tournament with 248 entries. Including the $1500,
theprize pool ought to be $11,420. (That's 248 x $40 + $1500.) However, the
tournament lobby gives the prize pool as $10,000 only.

In my view it is a serious matter to advertise that you are adding money to a
tournament and then not do it.

I agree 100% that integrity is a serious matter and I'm not here to defend UB. However I've watched this added money this time around, just as they did it in the past.

It is not true "added" money in the way you are defining it. I believe what they are doing is increasing the purse of daily tournaments that are typically smaller money.

In other words, Tournament "A" is a daily tournament that typically has a minimum guaranteed payout of $3500. If this tournament is selected as one of the special tournaments to get extra money, then what UB does is increase the minimum payout number to $5000.

So for example, if in this case there are 100 entries @$40, then the payout will still be $5000, not $5K + $1.5K.

I would agree with you that it is a bit misleading. What does happen sometimes is there is a little bit extra tournament equity if the field doesn't exceed the minimum.

But from my observations, much of the time, the field exceeeds the minimum anyway.

Bottom line, IMHO, is that it is a marketing gimmick to increase play during times when people are going to have some extra spare time. It is up to the individual to judge is this is unethical, misleading marketing, or something else. I personally don't see anything wrong with it, as I have gotten into some tournies with extra equity than might normally be there. Just take it for what it is.

At least in the 109 im in now it says they are adding the money on top of the prize pool and that money is reflected in the prize pool.

I wonder if they policy is not consistent.

Here's a weird thing that just happened.

The full overlay was given. Then alternates starting coming and they "ate into" the overlay.

In other words for every alternate, I believe the overlay was reduced by that buyin.

Does that make sense?

Does this make sense to anyone?

Hello,

The tournaments mentioned there [I sent them this link] were not modified to have the cashmas add-on due to a technical issue. All prizes will be manually
adjusted/credited as advertised and all remaining tournaments will be change to have the addition, you can notice by looking at
their name.
The money added is in fact working as it should, adding up to the guaranteed if the minimum is not met and adding up to the total
prizepool if the guaranteed is exceeded.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

In the $8k tonight at the start of the tournament, the total prize pool was exactly $1500 added. 15 minutes before the start, with 66 entries the prize pool was shown as $9500. At the tourney start there were 203 runners and the prize pool was $9620. After all the alternates were factored in, there were 239 runners and the prize pool was spot on, (239*40)+1500=11060.

I don't get the intermittent discrepancy. I think I've seen it earlier, too, last weekend if I recall correctly.

Who knows??

But GL me!!

They haven't responded to me at all; why do you get such a prompt (though unintelligible) response from UB support?

Here is the reply I received from UB:

Dear *****,

We apologize for the inconvenience, due to an internal communication issue some CashMas were
not properly added to the tournaments as advertised. Thank you to your report we manually
adjusted the prize pool for the tournaments that were already played and corrected the ones still
to be played.

If you were in the money for any of those tournaments you will see the adjustment made to your
account.

Do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything else we can help you with.

Best Regards,

Hector
