I like how people up North were totally ignorant to the racial-socioeconomic makeup of NOLA before this disaster, and now that they've seen a few cameras of black people looking destitute, somehow find a way to pin the city's situation on the current president.

It's a good thing most of these people aren't 18 yet, and their voice means nothing, because they think the World is a fantasyland. Re: Barbara Streisand, Michael Moore, et al.

"Hmmmm. lets see. I had nothing and now its all gone. Now I've got a roof, food, noone even expects me to work and I bet I'll get my full welfare checks once the gov can figure out how to get those to me. Plus I can get on TV (I mean other than when I was carrying those 30 cases of cigarettes out that broken window) If I could only find the best crack dealers here in the dome I'd be all set! Jeez good think I can't afford a car, you see how much gas is nowadays! Boy this Astrodome is getting kinda filthy.. wonder where they'll move us next... I bet I can string this out for months."

[/ QUOTE ]

The percentage of people who are homeless is very small compared to that of people who were poor. It may be difficult for this to penetrate that veil of ignorance that you wear so proudly, but the fact is that most poor people are hard-working, non-crack smoking, individuals who value both their possessions and their independence. Trust me: Very few of those who lost everything and are now being forced to live in the Astrodome with 10,000 other people are happy with the events of the last few weeks.

its a correct statement to say that people who had their homes and families destroyed are doing "very well" because theyre sleeping on cots in a giant football stadium with no privacy? are you gonna go join them in the astrodome?

[/ QUOTE ]

yes considering what they have been through i think a majority of them are doing very well and are very fortunate at the help they are recieving

and yes...i leave for NO thursday for the restricted zone to help people psychologically...so ur attempt at making me seem "above" them in a situation that i cant relate to them...is beyond way off...

What's funny about all this is that just two weeks ago my co-worker told me they were thinking of razing the Dome, due to the fact that it costs $1.5 Million per year to keep it in operation (before 10,000 people were added to it) and it's not doing anything.

Now it's doing something.

*Reliant Energy bought the rights to the Astrodome from the Harris Co. Houston Sports Authority when the Astros moved into Minute Maid Park (formerly Enron Field) back in 2000. They (Reliant) have basically been keeping it in operation until they could "figure out what to do with it". Several people want to turn it into a huge casino, but I doubt it will come to fruition.

But the implication of BB's statement is not that they are doing very well given the trying circumstances of the past week, but that they are doing well when compared to their previous "underprivileged" lives.

I would never be so presumptuous as to say that I think a lot of "them" are doing well. Are we talking about the homeless people who were stuck in the Superdome and Convention Center for 4 or 5 days is that who we're talking about? The ones who began to think that the world forgot about them and that they might actually perish on American soil from thirst and hunger? Are these the ones who are doing very well??

They are indeed fortunate to be alive but they have lost nearly everything and so they have a very tough road ahead. I do not envy them sleeping in an astrodome on cots next to strangers with so much uncertainty ahead. Stop acting like they are fortunate Peachy. Have you ever been poor or had to watch all your meager belongings evaporate before your eyes?

her statement was for hope, etc. god people...read the whole thing and look beyond headline context...they are fortunate to be where they are and getting any aid that they are...in most other countries they would all pretty much die...this country needs a serious reality and head check
