Default last great (good?) republican president

i came to this country during the clinton reign, so i only have first hand experience of #42 and #43 (42 being good with some faults, 43 being bad with few benefits). as far as presidents go, who was the last republican president greatly popular and successful? if he can't really fit the bill on those counts, who was just generally good as opposed to bad?

perhaps i should note that i mean popularity in terms of approval rating, rather than high school popularity, and success in terms of nation success, rather than box office success (RR jab).

Bush doesn't have nearly enough potential to compete for the title of worst president ever. He's far too mediocre. To be evil alone is not enough. To truly be the worst, one must have a special combination of (evil) intelligence, (evil) talent, (evil) vision, and (evil) work ethic.

Bush may be incompetent, but he's no evil genius.

What's the worst thing a president can do? Probably kill someone. Let's look at the totals:

Civil War: 550,000 dead. [source]
Gulf War II: 2,000 dead. [source]

These are just American military personel. Even if you pile in the maximum number of civilians from the "irag body count" site (which I'm *sure* is unbiased), bush doesn't even come close.

wow, what an irrelevant comparison. To the best of my knowledge, William Henry Harrison lost no U.S. soldiers. Wouldn't this make him the best U.S. president ever?

Just the luckiest not to be put in that situation.

There has never been a good Republican president and that includes Lincoln.

Of course, there has never been a good *Democrat* president either...
