Default How to do the all-in?

Quick question. I’m mainly an internet player, and I’ve seen the WPT shows where the guy makes a big gesture to indicate all-in (you know, shoving both hands forward from his waist, waving his hands toward the pot, etc.).

I tried a much watered down version of this where I said ‘All-in’ as I sort of half-waved my hand. I guess I sort of worry that people won’t hear my all-in, and its seems a bit much to actually reach back and forth a bunch of times to physically put all my chips in.

But then the dealer told me not to do that as people might interpret it as checking.

Any words of wisdom on gestures as one declares all-in?

Say "all-in" loud enough for the dealer to hear you. That should be about all you need.

It's always best for a beginner to study films to pick up pointers from the experienced pros. One of the best as far as all-in style is Humberto Brenes.

Humberto not only has great style, but he varies his moves depending on circumstances. His range varies from a classic seated two-handed pushing motion to his patented "Push from the Rail", where he starts from the gallery, walking rapidly toward the table with his hands fully extended palms out. (Do not try this at home.)

Accessories are also important. Humberto is fully accessorized, including multi-colored bandanas, and at least 2 pairs of glasses (plain and tinted), allowing either or both to be removed pre-push. Study the films and work on your moves at home, and no one will ever again be in doubt when you push all-in.

While it may be neat to do these types of things. You'll be better off just verbally stating "all-in". Gestures leave much room for misinterpretations.

Personally, I liked the Aviation Club WPT one where Frenchie starts with palms start at hips, face up, and then thrust forward slowly while jiggling one's ample belly in the process. There's something very Godfather-like about it, like "you'll sleep with the fishes if you don't fold."

OK. In a cash game, do this.

Action gets to you.

First, do nothing for like a minute.

Then, slowly look around the table.

Next, stand up.

Now pick one player, doesn't matter who.

Stare intently at the player you have picked.

Glance at the dealer, then look back at the player, then look back to the dealer, then back to the player.

Loudly say "I BET. (or I RAISE)"

Glance around the table, then focus on the player again.

"EVERYTHING!!!"

Then, messily shove your chips forward and sit down.

One way to show people that you're really serious is to take off your hat, your glasses, your watch and throw them into the center of the table along with your chips. If you want to even exceed that, strip off your shirt, pants, socks, and underwear and throw those on the table too. Stand there buck naked after you do this and whisper just above breath: "i am all in." No one will mistake that move for a check or a call, and you will show those live players that you internet players know a thing about casino poker.

That depends if you want a call or not.

If I want a call:
Sit there and grimace for like a minute. Then say "I'm all in I guess." Sloppily push them towards the pot. Then sit there with a frown on your face.

If I don't want a call.
Announce it loudly and start counting your chips out loud. This usually intimidates opponents more.

Then I realize none of this crap really matters, because at 1/2NL people are going to call me anyways, so I always make sure I have a quality hand before saying out loud that I'm all in.
