Default What do I do here?

I feel pretty badly about the way I played this hand. I kinda feel like check/folding this on the flop is terribly weak, but against 4 other people I'm not sure what to do with a pocket pair when an ace flops. All of my opponents are loose passive >40/<8/~1.

PokerStars 2/4 Hold'em (6 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is SB with T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
1 fold, MP calls, CO calls, Button calls, Hero raises, BB calls, MP calls, CO calls, Button calls.

Flop: (10 SB) 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (5 players)
Hero bets, BB calls, MP folds, CO calls, Button calls.

Turn: (7 BB) 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (4 players)

So after getting 3 callers on the flop I figure that I'm probably beat and decide to check/fold the turn. Anyone think I should have kept firing? Should I have accepted the inevitable and given up on the flop? How about the preflop raise, is raising out of the SB with TT when there are 2 or 3 limpers something that other people do or is that crazy too?

I'm usually raising JJ here out of the SB and completing w/TT. I don't think a raise is too horrible but there is going to be alot of flops that you are unhappy being OOP with TT in a 4 way pot.

Given that you raised p/f I bet the flop, and then either c/f the turn or c/c depending on where the turn bet comes from.

Being oop against 4 players with TT sucks jsut enough that I dont usually raise. I go back and forth though. Basically being in spots like the one you describe are the reason. It depends on you opponents and how your table image has been running i think. A LOT of the time I'll just checkfold, but once in a while I'll just keep firing. Sometimes you feel that your opponents are calling with worse hands or draws, usually you don't.

Preflop is good. Easy raise against typical loose limpers.

This is a sad flop and that's the way it goes. The pot is big enough that it's worth making a bet to see what happens next. Most scenarios where I get raised I either fold or take a card and then fold. No long-term commitments 5-handed out-of-position with an ace on board.

Everyone hates this turn situation. The 98 combination on the board will fit many limper hands as either a pair or a straight draw and these hands will certainly call the flop. Thus three callers does not mean you lose. You could bet again or you could check and see how it goes.

If I got three callers on an empty flop like A63r I'd probably give up unless my opponents were extremely loose. It's just hard to put them on three worse hands.

Also think about which opponents would raise various hands. That first caller might believe he should raise any ace to protect it. The Button might raise any OESD for value and any gutshot for a free card. Know your opponents and you may get a much better idea of who has what.

Thanks for the useful comments. I ended up folding the turn when the CO bet, and got called by the BB. CO bet again on the river and ended up taking down the pot without a showdown.

I think its a mistake not to raise out of the SB with 1010 with limpers in front of you. Unless you have a very good read of someone who might be slowplaying a bigger PP, NOT raising here is a mistake.

Not raising this from the SB would be a mistake. On that turn though, I think I would bet/fold it and check/fold the river if there is more than 1 person left in. I'm not sure how much I like that line though.
