Hourly Rate in Tournaments vs. Ring Games

OTOH, most of the truly bad players I know prefer tournaments. They figure they can get 4-6 hours of playing in for, say $100 in a tournament, vs. losing $100 in 5/10 in a 1/2 hour.

You might be right. Ring games are definitely more profitable for winning players. But, low buy-in tournaments may be the way to go for average and losing players.

Hi Walter:

First, it's very difficult to determine one's tournament hourly rate diue to the large short term luck factor and the fact that many tournaments have a different buy-in amount.

However, it's my opinion that the very best tournament players, and there are only a few of these, may be worth as much as double their buy-in in a no limit tournament that raises the stakes reasonably slowly and somewhat less in a limit tournament. Then figure that they will play approximately 60 percent of the hours that the tournament is expected to run. This should give you a very crude estimate of what the best players can do.

Two big bets an hour is much too high once you begin to play a reasonable limit which in my mind means $10-$20 and above.
