Thanks for the butt kicking. I just haven't seen so many different ways to bust good to great hands in one session. I have had runs of -220BB before, but it took a long time to get there, never this many in one night.
There was a post about these bad runs are good things. Please explain?

[/ QUOTE ]

because A. most poker players over-value their edge vs their competition, think they are better than they are

b. when everything is going well, tend not to be as introspective of their game, and attribute it all to skill, but once it goes bad, bam its all variance

wait a day or 2, then go into PT and replay the whole session, I bet you prob played a fair bit of the hands really bad, not trying to bash you, it happens to all but the very very best ..

They can be good things. Every time I've lost 100+BB I've looked over my game and tried and figure out if it's just variance or if I have significant leaks (which I definitely do). I start posting more hands and evaluating every hand I play more carefully. What could be more +EV in the long run than that?

If you drop it every session, it isn't variance. Also, you might want to consider switching professions.

A couple of days back I got through 400 hands with a 5% W$WSF this was a serious low in an otherwise run of the mill downswing that had lasted 5000 hands (and -180BB). Yesterday I got through my first 100 hands with a 70% W$WSF including 6 wins in pots over 15BB. I was EXACTLY 100BB/100 after 110 hands. Now, if I switch sites to one that doesn't know I just had this up-swing will I be more likely to do it again?

I really think the fear with the downswings is that if it happens once, it can happen twice... and if twice it could happen 3 times and then it could just keep happening; and then we'd lose all our money and we'd realise we were just deluded gambling addicts like all our friends and families suspect and hint at. Oh the shame!

Read Gambling Theory and Other Topics by Mason Malmuth.

Then you will never say

[ QUOTE ]
Any tricks to beat this kind of crap (say play on multiple sites so when you are running bad on one go to another)?

[/ QUOTE ]

this again, as it is very dangerous to think this is even a possiblity. You can run bad, much worse than you ever thought possible and it will not matter how many sites you play on.

You need to understand for yourself why this is true not have people here tell you it is so. Sorry you got screwed over so bad on that session and sorry if I sound like a jerk, but this is important. I and I think everyone else here went through the same thing you are going through.

It suks but if you learn why it is a good thing you are going to be set for the next time it happens to you. As it will happen again, and again to you and to all of us. It is a good thing beleive it or not.

[/ QUOTE ]

Good post. Though this concept is much easier to realize when you don't watch aces and kings bust 4 times in a session. But it happens, and I agree with the rev in his aggreement with miles.
