I think I go for steals too often with a deep stack
I still don't have a great feel for exactly how aggro I should be in the middle stages of a tourney with a 40+ bb stack. I tend to go for a lot of steals with marginal hands, and I'm starting to think I should back off a little.
Thoughts?

I do the same thing. Thats pretty much how I get most of my chips by stealing. I have notes on all of the people so I know when/who to steal from.
I won't tell you to back off if it's working for you as it's working for me since even when they fire back, I will be right back stealing next hand etc... and in the long run, I make more chips than I lose when they fire back at me. Only advice is to take more notes on the really tight people at the table, are they likely to fire back with marginal hands too, can they fold a strong hand to a raise etc... I got all of this written down. Also, if it reaches post-flop I have notes on them how many times they have check-folded, check-called and check-raised just incase I will do a bluff bet on the flop.

your hand is irrelevant when restealing, look for the optimal situation to resteal not the optimal hand.

If you only have 40xBB if you are restealing you probably moving in or at least pot comiting yourself. So you want to have a hand that won't be dominated in case where you do get called.

Ok I was thinking 3-4x BB bet to steal but lets say 3x. If it's a normal reraise not some minraise stuff you get reraised to 8 to 10x. So how much would you reraise here to make reraiser fold and not pot comit yourself.

[/ QUOTE ] This post is not about rereresteals, it's about steals--as in, its folded to you on the CO and you raise to 3x BB or so.

As far as OP question you steal when you can if you can get away with it. It all depends on what the table lets you do. I've played at tables where I've actually won 9-10 hands in a row because they would not call a raise without a premium hand. Other times you know you are getting reraised if it looks like a steal so you wait for a good hand to get paid off.
